REGARDING YOUR article "Teaching Elijah," you mentioned the term "clinical studies." I am very cautious when I hear that general term without any specifics, like how many and what types of groups. Please be responsible, especially when talking about something as controversial as behavior analysis therapy. There are many people who may be attracted to this new so-called cure. Groups of people may have false hope and get a false sense of security because of your lack of specific information. Unless you're going to tell the whole story, don't tell the story at all.
THIS IS a response to "Unnecessary potshots." David Copperfield did not make Clinton commit all the acts of sin that he has been proven guilty of, with more details coming out every day. I think you just set back Cape Girardeau and the Show Me Center a few decades with your narrow-minded thinking.
I WOULD like to say that justice was done when Jack Kevorkian was given 10 to 15 years in prison. If this is a life sentence for him, then I will have no regrets because this is just part of the justice that he deserves for the murders that he has commited. I knew a man who had Lou Gehrig's disease. I knew this man when he was well and I knew this man when he was ill. It was with great dignity that his family went through his death. They were great examples to those around them. The grandchildren would push the wheelchair, and the man and his wife moved into a trailer with a ramp for easier access. The wife of the man also carried herself with great dignity. There certainly was never a thought of putting the father that they loved so much to death before God was ready to take him from this earth. No death is easy. Whether it's cancer or if there is any disease you can get before you die, I think it's important for our children to see death with dignity, and there are sacrifices you make for those you have loved for so many years.
THE PERSON who called into Speak Out is so wrong. Ken Starr should not have been fired, Mr. Clinton should have stepped down and resigned. I did not realize how much until wars started happening. As a Democrat, I fully expected that a Democratic president would not sexually harass women in the work place.
THIS IS addressed to the guy who commented in "She's my wife" who's fed up with politically correct terms. Actually what you said in your piece about dual citizenship is true for the American Indians. If you are in a federally recognized tribe you do have dual citizenship. You are a nation within a nation, and that tribe functions with a government-to-government relationship with the U.S.
THERE ARE two groups of individuals directly affected by the future of the River Campus who are conspicuous in their silence. Professor and instructors certainly must have opinions on this. Is it merely that they are supportive of the move, or are they afraid to voice their opposition? After all, the Southeast Missouri State University administration and Cape Girardeau officials are the most vocal supporters of the River Campus. No big surprise. The administration at Southeast has already stated that this move will give more space on campus for academics, and of course the city would once again like to cash in on the university's impulsive extravagance. What about that second group, the students? They surely will be affected if they travel back and forth the first two or three years of their careers with large portfolios and instruments. Why not consider other options on campus and make this a campus people want to visit for its cultural flavor rather than a campus who's culture is across town.
I'D LIKE to say something nice about the legal system. Two women judges recently asserted themselves by handing out well-deserved decisions. One, Judge Wright of Little Rock, by finding the president in contempt of court in the Paula Jones case. And the other, Judge Jessica Cooper, in sentencing Jack Kevorkian. If it takes women to set a good example for our legal system, more power to them. Perhaps we should have more of them.
ANYONE WHO takes campaign money from the Chinese and then lets the Chinese scientist steal our nuclear-weapons technology, covers it up, gives them the other technology they need and then starts a war in Yugoslavia to cover it up, that person is a traitor. If the shoe fits, wear it.
WE SHOULD have a special day to honor the citizens of the United States born from 1860 to 1911 who voted in the election of 1932 to bring President Franklin Roosevelt as our president and elected a Democratic Congress that brought the New Deal in that brought us progress that put the people back to work and put us on the road to recovery. If it wasn't for those people, we would not have Social Security today. We would not have unemployment insurance, or social welfare for the people who need it today. I think instead of the Bill Emerson Emerson Bridge, we should have the Bill Zimmerman Expressway. And we should have a special day off for Franklin Roosevelt's birthday. Praise these wonderful citizens who voted Democratic that wonderful year in 1932 and returned him in 1936. Those are the people who my hat is off to.
REGARDING THE Proposition B issue, I am just a city girl from Dallas who appreciates danger. Why do the cowboys from Southeast Missouri feel that a person can protect themselves better with a gun? Many times crime occurs where a individual is just plain overpowered. A gun is not necessarily a help or the answer. St. Louis knows that. Please respect those who have experience in situations where guns would not have been or would not necessarily be a lifesaver.
