I AGREE with the caller who questions the Missourian's support of voodoo economics. I think the Missourian should drop its subscription rates by 20 percent, allowing people to spend more money with the Missourian's advertisers, thereby allowing the advertisers to pay their employees more and produce more goods. Some of us care

I WAS a Democrat years ago, and proud of the party's stand on issues. Roosevelt and Truman -- our family all admired them. But the Democratic Party has become the party of no values. It's pushing for abortion, perverted groups, the Hollywood lifestyle, the freaks, atheists. Anything goes under this pretense that all are treated bad and let them do their thing even though it destroys the character and values and the decency of human beings in the country. The Democrats have become the leader of godless views, and they deny it, backing the president with quotes like "They all do it," "It's his personal life," "You'd lie too if you were caught," "Hillary doesn't care, so why should you?" First of all, they all don't do it. There are still a few decent people in our country. Second, a president's actions should be decent and honorable, private or not. Third, Hillary may not care, but some of us do.

IN SUNDAY'S Progress edition, there was an interesting article about Carrie Nation's visit. I have a gold-plated stickpin made in the hatchet shape, but I have never found a place that states its value. I wonder if they were given or sold at her visit here.

Take away DWI cars

I'D LIKE to comment about people charged with DWIs. Why don't we do like New York City? Anyone caught driving under the influence should have his car taken away, whether it's his car or not. I bet people would think twice before driving drunk. It would save a lot of lives and a lot of money. We would not have to put them in jail, and we could make money from the sale of the cars. Think about it. It's a good idea.

Consider the lost lives

FOR THOSE wondering whether to lower the blood alcohol content from 0.10 to 0.08 percent, consider this: Tens of thousands of men, women and children are killed every year on our highways because of drinking and driving, while people complain of their loss of freedom to drink and drive. That cold beer that touches your lips is not as cold as the face of my child as I kissed him for the last time before they lowered him into the ground because of a drunk driver. Drinking and driving is no accident.

Thanks for spaying coupon

I'D LIKE to personally say thank you to the Humane Society for the voucher I received to have my cat spayed. It's a wonderful gift, a wonderful, generous gesture that shows a lot of caring about animals. I understand the veterinarians all helped in this also. I think it was a great idea, and it helped me very much. Thank you!

Who would she go to?

I'D LIKE to comment on the Democrats who keep saying, "Why did this woman wait so long, 21 years, to get out and say this?" Who would she tell it to? The attorney general of Arkansas? If someone else comes forward, are they going to tell Janet Reno? Reno says there's no evidence to back up this case. That's what she said about Waco, Paula Jones and all of them. Who would this woman have gone to?

No common sense about history

C-SPAN JUST featured a blooming idiot named Angela Davis. She is a history professor at one California's universities. She might also be remembered for her infamous past. Angela Davis says all guns should be seized from all Americans. She also says that all guns should be seized from all the police departments and all of the federal government. How does a history professor like her attain her position without exhibiting a shred of common sense? Whom does she think would rule the people of the United States if her beliefs were actuality? Foreign powers? Mafia? Criminal gangs? The Army? Federal agencies? Warring factions? Racist or religious groups? A history professor should be aware of our forefathers' intentions and wise decisions. It is the Bill of Rights and private gun ownership that distinguish the United States from every country int he world and makes it the strongest country in the world. The real sadness is the taxpayers of California have to foot the bill for this idiocy.

Making a hard choice

EVERYBODY HAS a choice. They can be right-to-life or freedom-of-choice. But the truth is, God does respect life. All life. But he does not respect a person who brings a life into this world without a name. God did give us a choice to choose to do right or to choose to do wrong. There's a big difference between pro-lifers and pro-choice. But the pro-lifers didn't paint the whole picture. It's a wonderful thing they're saying, but God did not tell us to get pregnant out of wedlock. That was your choice. God had nothing to do with it. It's a shame to put your sin on the head of an unborn child or upon the child after it is born especially. You bear the burden of your own sin, even if that means having an abortion if you're not married and decent enough to give that child a name. It would have to take your name. Read your Bible.

A matter of lost trust

TO THE Cape Girardeau School Board: You had our trust before, when your first proposal was made and we voted for the tax increase. Now you've gone behind our backs and put up a second proposal that changes everything. You had our trust at one time. You no longer have it. Please remember that you were voted for by the people for the people, not to go behind our backs and change that. You have done that and lost our trust. And lost our vote. Now we must try to change things.

Thanks for work on Hopper

I WANT to thank the Cape Girardeau City Council for voting to build a new section of Hopper Road. I hope it will be much straighter and safer than the existing Hopper Road. Someday we're going to need to fix the old Hopper Road, because it's falling in on the shoulders, the ditches are getting deeper and deeper as they erode. It's becoming dangerous for all the traffic.

Criminals have guns

IN THE past I have not been a very big Peter Kinder fan, but I really enjoyed his column, "Proposed right-to-carry law would give state what most have." Very interesting. His point is that criminals know that this is a government-certified guarantee that their victims are unarmed. Let's face it, criminals already have guns.

Recruit at pool halls

SO a committee wants another tax increase for highways. I can't recall seeing any of the previously promised great achievements as a result of the last tax increase. Instead I see littered highway right-of-ways which are mowed once or twice each year. I must admit, though, that the grass and weeds help conceal the trash and bottles, so perhaps that's part of the plan. Evidently, there seems to be a problem acquiring competent people at top levels of management. Perhaps it would be in line to go to the local pool halls for the recruitment of honest and capable people as replacements for what MoDOT has at present.

Clean house on both sides

IN ANSWER to the Speak Out comment, "Need to elect decent folks": I agree, but I find it intriguing that you keep talking about Clinton and Democrats, because the Republicans have been giving us many adulterers. Don't forget the list of names. I'm sure you've heard them. Apparently the Republicans aren't going to talk about their adulterers. You have indecent people who have been elected on the Republican side. Both sides need to clean house. Not just the Democrats. Face the facts. Republicans are sinners and adulterers too.

Anything for ratings

WHEN MONICA is interviewed on TV, why shouldn't Mr. Clinton be there too to give his version and scumy details? Personally, I don't think they should interview this trash. What a way to fame. Anything for ratings. What a low moral nation we have.
