Embarrassing bias

YOUR EDITORIAL exegesis to the effect that a gubernatorial executive order you don't like is an egregious violation of the constitutional principle of separation of powers exemplifies a degree of bias embarrassing even to yellow journalists.

State's best fans

I AM writing in response to the Speak Out caller who felt Central High School students "dampen the game with poor sportsmanship." Jackson High School students have been responsible for thousands of dollars of vandalism toward Central. Central has done nothing that a little water couldn't wash away. If Central fans are such a disgrace to the game, then why were we named the best fans in Missouri?

Hypocritical Saudis

I HAVE a question that has been bothering me ever since Saudi Arabia announced its position that it would not allow one U.S. soldier on its soil to fight an Arab or Muslim. Why has its position changed from 10 years ago when it was threatened with invasion from Iraq? When Saddam had taken over Kuwait and had Saudi Arabia directly in his gunsights, the Saudis were only too happy to let any infidels in to pull their butts out of the fire. Even a died-in-the-wool ultra-liberal like myself can see the hypocrisy in that position.

Losing credibility

I TOO, along with millions of other Americans, would like to know just what Jesse Jackson hopes to negotiate in Afghanistan. How can one negotiate with a murderer? Jackson is being used by the Taliban. He is making all black people in this country look bad. Jackson has lost his credibility in this country.

Best man won

I JUST read Gerald Posner's column, "I was wrong about Bush." I want to ditto the column. I was wrong about Bush too. I too voted for Al Gore and thought he would make a better president. But the way President Bush has reacted and handled the attack on our country with sincerity, emotion and humbleness has definitely changed my mind. The best man won and is our president.

Terrorists succeeding

WHO IS the enemy? They have no army or country of their own. The terrorists have caused us to activate our armed services plus our civilian reservists. Terrorists must be stopped from killing innocents, but our government is severely overreacting. Next to killing Americans, the terrorists' goal is to cripple the United States economically, and they are succeeding. I speak as a World War II combat veteran.

Too many flags?

I'M AN American, and I love to see all of the flags flying all over the city, but the house across the street has six flags in the yard and three on a car. Do you think they are going too far?

Send convicts to war

I'D LIKE to respond to "Sick of punks." Here is an idea: Why don't we stop paying for all of these people who are in prison? They seem to have no trouble whatsoever with killing people, so why don't we put them on the front line instead of our children? Today's youths do not need any more ideas of killing or harming people.

Fair scheduling

IN REGARD to the SEMO District Fair, I want to know if it is possible for the fair board to have the demolition derby on Saturday nights instead of Monday nights and have the country music on the weeknights before Saturday. People usually have to work during the week, and we would like to see the demolition derby.

Confusion about God

THE TWO favorite bumper stickers seem to be "God is pro-life" and "God bless America." But it was God in Genesis who placed the curse of death upon mankind, and it is that same God, I would presume, who allowed thousands of innocent people to die in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11. How, then, is God pro-life or in what sense does he bless America?
