Information request

THE Missouri Gaming Commission is a state institution and is subject to freedom of information requests. If the proposed casino company will not voluntarily disclose the overall economics of its gambling operation, it would appear that the company might not want public awareness before the upcoming vote. Granted, money goes to the city and state governments and on to worthy causes. Money is put into the economy via the casino payroll. But do any of the local voters know how much money the casino drains out of the local economy?

Give appropriate tips

As a server and bartender, I'm disgusted to receive a dollar tip from people that I wait on hand and foot. Please don't use the excuse that we are in a recession and it's all you can afford, because maybe you would have saved a little money if you stayed home. The average server makes around $3 per hour and relies on tips to survive. When I wait on someone whose bill is over $10 and a single dollar is left on the table, it makes me feel like I did something wrong.

Christianity mocked

WHILE atheism has been around a while, in the last 10 years it's become more fashionable or politically correct to be atheist. Christianity has been around far longer, but over the last 30-plus years, it's been the butt of jokes, portrayed as the cause of evil in TV shows and movies and treated as binding, limiting, enslaving of women and bigoted. Staunch, militant atheists have been trying not only to shove Christianity into the closet but out of our society altogether. Bill Maher has stated his contempt for all religion, but Christianity has been at the top of his list. Rosie O'Donnell has compared evangelical Christians to jihadist terrorists. While Christians do disagree with atheism, we do try to show that God is real without shoving him down atheists' throats. Can atheists say the same?

Give, don't gamble

I'D like to ask the ones who get a high from gambling if they would consider using their extra money to help some family or charity that is struggling financially. It's a great feeling, and you'll come to realize that there's no high like doing something for God. When I learned this, it changed my life.

Fool's gold

TO the voters of Cape Girardeau: Don't be fooled by the promoters of the casino. They're telling you about the glitz and glitter of additional profits while keeping quiet about the negative impact it would have on many family businesses in the area. The gambling industry has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to lure people into their casinos and keep them there. The casinos don't want people spending their money somewhere else. They want it, and they'll spend whatever it takes to get it. Local business owners need more business, not less, especially now with the economy as it is.

No common sense

THOUGH I oppose most liberal types with every fiber of my being, at least their members have led us all to realize that the essential nature of man is irrational, lacking in personal responsibility, and devoid of common sense.

Thank you, Debra

THANK you, Debra Tracy, for standing up and voicing an opinion that apparently is not popular. Apparently our city council members are thinking only of the money Isle Of Capri says it will bring to Cape Girardeau.

Wrong attitude

"IF I come as an immigrant, you have the obligation to make me a citizen," Zeituni Onyango told WBZ-TV in an interview Monday. Is that a good attitude for someone who has lived and continues to live off the taxpayers without ever having contributed?
