More shock time
JURIES MAY decide guilt but are often not the ones who decide the punishment. How many times in Cape Girardeau County have defendants who are already on probation been placed on double probation for the same offense? Recently a man was sentenced to 120 days of shock time in prison for the second time. I guess the shock did not work the first time.
Sidewalk spending
If the purpose of the bike and walking trail was for people's exercise and enjoyment, could someone please explain why our tax money is being spent on sidewalks all over town?
Stem cells wasted
AS POOR Richard said many years ago, "Waste not, want not." The people of Southeast Missouri scare me. They are throwing away embryonic stem cells that could be used for Alzheimer's, arthritis and many other problems including Lou Gehrig's disease. The stem cells are going to be wasted, but our president has the idea that it's murder to use them for saving people's lives. The people in Southeast Missouri are against stem-cell research while the rest of the country is for it. Something's wrong.
Flying the flag
THIS IS a 82-year-old veteran of World War II and Korea. I appreciate a lot of the ceremonies for Memorial Day and respect for the boys we've lost, but I was saddened to see so few flags flying at half-staff on Memorial Day morning.
Ivy on trees
I NOTICE as I drive around town that there's ivy growing on a lot of trees. It's very attractive to look at, but I don't know if people are aware that this will eventually kill those trees. It needs to be kept off the trees. I noticed there's a big tree in Capaha Park between the big shelter and the lagoon that has a bunch of it. I pulled some of it off, but the rest needs to come off.

Beautiful rose garden
HAS ANYONE seen the rose garden lately? I think that Mr. Aufdenberg deserves a big applause for all the work he's done. The garden hasn't looked so beautiful in years. The city should be proud of it.
Dog safety
DON'T LET your dogs ride in the back of a pickup unless you've got a camper and the windows are open so the fumes don't get in there and kill it. If your dog rides in a car, make sure it's strapped into a seat belt. Wise up. You wear a seat belt also.
He's no hero
I'M GLAD I have lived long enough to learn the name of Deep Throat. Mark Felt is not the hero his family seems to think he is. I agree with comments from people in the know that he did what he did because he was angry that he was not promoted to top command at the FBI when J. Edgar Hoover died. Felt caused this country much grief and trouble, to say nothing of the unnecessary millions of tax dollars spent on all that Watergate business. I hope the media will stop making him the hero that he is not.
Stem cell information
THE WHOLE theory behind embryonic stem-cell research is that you do not have to wait 56 days. The potential to get the needed results is there from the onset. If the opposition is intentionally misrepresenting the case in abortion-like terms, that would show the desperation and vitriol that this issue produces. That would be a shame.
Support the arts
WITH THE coming of the River Campus and the necessity of cultural revitalization of the downtown area of Cape Girardeau, it is important that all citizens support the efforts being made by community members to encourage artistic endeavors like the Show Me Digital Film Festival and local music and performance fest. If Cape is to grow culturally and economically, we should all get involved and support the arts and our talented local artists.
