Pizza memories
I enjoyed Joe Sullivan's recent column about pizza. My favorite was a shared sausage pizza from a place named Tony's on Broadway in Cape Girardeau and usually consumed early in the morning after a night of carousing with the boys on the east side at places like the Purple Crackle, the Colony Club and, if we had our nerve up, the Why Not Club.
Medical extension
I read Rudi Keller's interesting and informative April 17 front-page story about health care reform. It reminded me of a guy I know whose doctor told him he had six months to live. When the doctor found out the guy couldn't pay his bill, he gave him six months more.
More stadiums
CENTRAL High School needs a home stadium. It would keep traffic down and help the community as a whole. It would cost us as a community in taxes, but I would rather give my money locally to education than AIG or large banks. While we are at it, Jackson High School needs a new stadium and gym too. How can you fit all of those grandparents, parents and relatives in that stadium and gym for all the precious moments of our children's lives?
Missing bins
IS your recycling bin missing? I was doing yard work when the recycle truck picked up my stuff. A woman driving a car with Illinois license plates grabbed my recycle bin. I managed to flag her down, and she said, "I'm not from Cape and didn't know why they were by the road." When I looked in her back seat, she had a whole stack of recycle bins.

Courageous stand
THANK you, Jack Knowlan, for having the guts to say what so many think about assault rifles but won't say because they don't want to put up with the backlash from all the "Me too, Rush" thinkers in Southeast Missouri. You are a credit to your community. You have probably done more to save lives than all the assault rifles currently hidden by the paranoid and insecure who fanaticize a government bogey man raiding their tea party.
Far right
A portion of the YouTube online video featuring Cape Girardeau's tea party protest and available on the Southeast Missourian website had one of the speakers saying in part that the protest was illustrative of our nation being "on the right step." If what I heard and read about the tea party protests are true, I think the speaker should have said the protests were examples of our nation being on the far, far, far right step.
Infringing on guns
BEWARE of House Resolution 45, the Blair Hold Firearm Licensing Bill 2009. This bill violates the Second Amendment, which says: The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. Infringed: to encroach on someone or something. Encroach: enter by gradual steps or by stealth into the possessions or rights of others. Sound familiar?
Misdirected concern
REGARDING a recent comment about global warming: Even though atmospheric carbon dioxide has risen a few parts per billion, it's important to remember higher temperatures do not follow increased carbon dioxide. We should also note that contrary to what many accept as fact, it hasn't been getting warmer for about 10 years. Please seek out information from sources other than those invested in global warming hysteria. The more fearful you get, the more power and money they get. If you investigate both sides of the issue, your concerns will be about our freedom and our economy, not that the sky is falling.
