I AGREE 100 percent with the person who said we should use county prisoners to clean up Interstate 55 coming into Cape Girardeau and plant some dogwood trees. I think some redbud trees would be pretty too. When the dogwoods and redbuds are in bloom along I-55 about halfway to St. Louis, it is absolutely beautiful. Our city could offer that same unforgettable feature.
I AGREE wholeheartedly with a recent comment that said folks in our area shouldn't question administrators at the university since those administrators had worked long and hard over the course of many years to acquire the knowledge and training necessary to make those decisions. Back in the day when blacks were not afforded the opportunity to vote, I never questioned the prudence of our lawmakers, because I knew they had worked hard to become qualified to make those decisions. I could give numerous other examples of the prudence of our lawmakers and bureaucrats, but it's time for me to go stick my head back in the sand.
AT THE time our Constitution was written, the English people were forced to belong to the Church of England. Failure to do so meant severe punishment or even death. That's why our founders wrote in the Constitution that there should be no establishment of a national religion in America. It's just that simple. The phrase "separation of church and state" does not exist in our Constitution. That phrase was first used by Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black in the mid-20th century.
WHY DOESN'T the public get to evaluate administrators in the Cape Girardeau School District? Why can't we evaluate them and have our evaluations go to the school board?
The measure of a successful parasite is that it just sucks enough out of its host to cause minor debilitation but doesn't kill the host because that results in its own death. Unfortunately, the right-wing lunatics who have taken over the Republican Party and control both Washington and Jefferson City have not learned that lesson. They want to kill the host. That's the only explanation for programs that seem designed to destroy our natural resources, pollute our air and water and bankrupt the nation with an absurd tax-cut-and-spend program. Let's hope folks wake up before the host is too sick to survive.
SOUTHEAST MISSOURI State University is always crying for money and complaining about the governor withholding money. I've got an idea. Let's put two water fountains at the university entrance at Broadway and Henderson Avenue. This will make things all better. Sounds to me like poor management at the university and Jefferson City.
THIS IS one liberal Democrat who is appalled by the U.S. Supreme Court decision to deny execution to juveniles when they commit hideous crimes. I believe he who sheds man's blood, may his blood also be shed by man. Whether you're 14, 44, 84 or 94, you're just as dead. What about the people in the grave? It seems to me that they got murdered again too. They're setting monsters loose to murder again in prison.
EVERYBODY HAS a story about standing in line at the supermarket when someone on food stamps bought a lot of luxury items instead of needed staples with their food stamps. If somebody is scamming Medicaid, you don't punish everybody on the entire program. Instead, you find a way to eliminate the scam artists. Gov. Matt Blunt is using the excuse of eliminating the scam artists to make the cuts that he wanted to make anyway.
