Why do you print Associated Press stories in the main section of the paper as though they were facts that say things like in the debates Bush is tough, Gore is nice. Anybody who actually watched that first debate knows Gore was impolite. He kept interrupting. He kept taking more time than he was allowed. He didn't tell the truth. He lied on the numbers, and then we print a story saying Gore is nice. Why don't you put AP stories that are obviously biased in the Opinion section of the newspaper instead of putting them in front part as though they are the truth?
SOMEONE IN the city street department made the remark recently that the city couldn't start striping the streets that have been refinished until everything is done. I can't understand that. There's no connection between the two. They should start striping. The weather's going to get bad, and traffic is going to get heavier the closer it gets to the holidays. They should start striping these streets now while the weather's nice and the paint can dry fast.
THERE IS much being said about Gore's and Bush's tax-reduction plans. I have yet to hear mentioned that one of the major themes of Clinton and Gore's 1992 campaign was "tax cuts for the middle class." It never happened. They never intended to cut our taxes. In fact, they raised them. So why in the world would people with reasonable intelligence actually believe that Gore would lower taxes? Democrats don't do that. Clinton just vetoed the death-tax elimination and marriage-tax elimination bills. They lied before, and I'd bet the ranch that Gore's lying now.
WHEN WILL contributors to Speak Out realize that a vice president of the United States has no authority and very little influence in passing new laws. Congress -- more particularly, the political party in the majority -- passes all laws.
WHY DOES Gore badmouth the wealthy? With their expertise, they have made it possible for the middle class to have jobs. There it is.
THE CAPE County commissioners seem to have forgotten what they were elected to do. They say they can't do anything about the dust on gravel roads, but this has definitely become a serious health problem. But they don't have the money to fix it. They only have money for pet projects like Cape transit, which doesn't cost any tax money. We can wait and see about planning and zoning, which has already cost taxpayers money and will cost more if it is voted in. When all is said and done, they will need some good old boys and girls on the county payroll. All these pet projects don't alleviate the dust situation. I would advise the commissioners to wake up and smell the dust, because planning and zoning can cost Cape County more than fixing the roads. If the commissioners won't listen to the people who have to live with this situation with dust so bad you can't work in your own yard, then the next best thing I could suggest would be some new faces in the commissioner's office.
I PICKED up my paper and saw Mr. Drury had won his lawsuit. I'm thankful for this. I think everyone in Cape who does not want this River Campus should get behind Mr. Drury 100 percent. And they need to stop these college kids from parking on all the streets. They fill up Capaha Park so people can't even use the park. All you people who want to get behind Mr. Drury on this should call in to Speak Out and voice your opinion.
I CLAIM to have a Republican view. I say "less government." It is so large that nothing gets done. During the election times you hear this stuff, but nothing is done. What has the Republican Congress done these past eight years? A lot of money was spent on investigations that ended up with nothing being done.
