I WAS pleased to see the article, "Is he worth it?" regarding Dale Nitzschke. However, you did not dig deep enough. I have an article that I saved from the Alumni Signal in 1999. It states that prior to signing Nitzschke as chancellor and fund-raiser, "during the past fiscal year the university received a record $5.29 million in grants to fund 112 projects. The federal government provided $3 million and the state provided $2 million. Other grants, agencies and associations provided $214,000." In the paper it states, "After we hired this gentleman to raise money for us, in two years he has raised $10 million dollars." That is no more than what we had before we hired him. What do we need him for? Why don't you take his salary and give it to employees as raises?
I HAVE been in and out of the Scott City's City Hall at least once a week for the past 15 years, and I can honestly say there has never been a time when the ladies ever presented themselves less than proper in dress or in attitude. These ladies put up with a lot from the public. Three years ago I went into the office and, without giving the poor girl a chance to really know what I was mad about, ranted and raved and really laid into her and her co-workers. When I finally let the lady speak and ask a question or two, she was able to get me an answer for my problem -- not the one I wanted, because the problem turned out to be my fault. Not once did this lady raise her voice to me. I later called and explained to the lady that I was very sorry for the way I acted. Every time I have to go to city hall they smile and say hello and have a nice day. Keep it up, ladies.
I AM sick and tired of all of you crybabies who are complaining about not getting a tax refund. Are we supposed to feel sorry for the deadbeat fathers who owe in child support? Or the people who are delinquent on student loans? Better yet, the people who haven't paid their taxes at all? Why is it you feel you are entitled to something you haven't put in? Has it ever crossed your mind that the people getting a refund actually worked for it? Americans need to get it out of their heads that society owes them something for nothing.
CONGRATULATIONS ON new ventures and an expression of sadness for Cindie Jeter's goodbye to KZIM. You will be missed, Cindie. Thank you for being there to tell the truth and listen to reason. Pass your values on to your students.
THANK GOD our community is blessed with the likes of Dr. Theodore J. Grieshop. Obviously he was paying attention in school when they talked about human cell development. He is a credit to his entire family.
THIS IS in response to "SEMO does not need a River Campus." What we do not need is a sports complex. Don't you see what the River Campus could bring to this area? Oh, I forgot you grew up in this intellectual wasteland with no cultural events to speak of, but plenty of ball games and beer.
I WOULD like to comment on all the environmental zealots who are screaming about the proposed drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The reserve was created by President Eisenhower. However, the extremists in the Sierra Club are always going on record saying that Republicans are against the environment. If they are right, Eisenhower wouldn't have created the refuge. And if it didn't exist, the area would be wide open to drilling.
WAS AUG. 1 Cape Area Just Stay Home Day? It seems the city is spreading itself thin to have so many closed streets and not working on all of them. If I had projects of that nature, I'd do one, then the next, and not just bounce around town for months leaving streets in sorry shape and traffic in such disarray.
LET'S GIVE First Assembly of God a break. I could think of worse things going into my neighborhood. And to think of the opportunities my children will have within walking distance of my home with the amphitheater and sports complex, not to mention the safe, positive atmosphere. I want to commend Pastor Gary Brothers for wanting to provide a positive outlet for the youth of my neighborhood. We need more people like him in the world. God bless, and keep up the good work.
I LOVE Cape Girardeau and feel that it's getting better every year. People are some of the nicest anywhere in the world. We have great restaurants and lots of churches where people actually attend. Our schools are getting better, and our teachers are caring. The movie theaters are great, and we have excellent grocery stores and parks and even a biking trail. This place is growing nicely, and the people are nice, too. Yes, there are some rude people here, and some of the sales attendants in this town are clueless. But that's not too different from anywhere else. In fact, except for some of the dumbest salespeople I've ever met and the fact that blacks and whites should do more things together, this is truly one of the best places in the country to live.
I WAS saddened by the YELL Foundation's decision to terminate the annual YELL edition of the Southeast Missourian in its current form. However, I think it was for the best. The road rage expressions on some drivers' faces as they ignored my tentative and timid efforts to sell them a YELL edition made me worry the day may come when I would be reduced to roadkill. Had that happened, at least I would have given it up for an honorable cause.
I WOULD like to remind people that if you know an elderly person, especially one who lives alone, check on them daily. During this extreme heat, they can become dehydrated easily. Make sure they are using their air conditioning or at least fans. If they don't have either, offer to take them to your home or to a shelter for the day. They are a precious commodity. They are the Hero Generation.
SEMO DOES not need a sports complex. I've been a student for a couple years now and have yet to use the existing complexes or attend a game. I'm there for an education, not a sports fest. It wouldn't hurt my feelings any if SEMO just eliminated all sports and concentrated on actually giving people an education.
GALILEO IS correctly considered the father of modern science. He is a seminal figure not only in the history of science, but in all of world history. That is why I was so disappointed that Dr. Theodore Grieshop's otherwise well-written commentary on embryonic stem-cell research was severely compromised by his failed attempt to somehow justify the medieval church's excommunication and incarceration of Galileo.
