I'M READING Speak Out about the gas problem. People are criticizing President Bush for the gas shortage. Everybody's wanting to blame everybody else. If the people who are calling and others could become more efficient in their energy use, they could bring prices down, but they don't want to sacrifice anything. They want somebody else to do the work for them while they continue to be wasteful.
I WANTED say how proud I am of the Lady Tigers soccer team. You deserve the district title. You played your hearts out. But most of all, you were having fun, and that's the main thing. I want to commend the high school students who came out and supported the team. I think the team played extra hard because of your support. It was fantastic.
THANKS TO Jackson Park Board for bringing a very efficient park and recreation director to our town. The ball leagues and the scheduling of games have never been better. Shane Anderson is awesome.
IN REGARD to Charter Communications, the cable-TV company: We've had all this disruption in our cable services, and they switched the channels around. They raised the monthly rate, and I get fewer channels now than I did before. I think it's time that we looked at the competition in the cable industry.
OK, YOU Republicans, eight years ago, Clinton won the election on account of the poor economy. Bush says there's nothing that can be done about the economy. Gas prices are higher than they were during Clinton's term. That's OK for Bush. He is from an oil family. Bush wants to give a tax cut so he can use it to buy gas and make the rich richer. Come back, Bill. Please.
IF OUR city leaders think the roundabout is so great, why don't they open the rest of Silver Springs Road? It's been completed for weeks.
NO, I'M not going to apologize for being an American citizen and using fuel. I don't care what Europe does. I don't care if Europeans conserve and their gasoline is $5 a gallon. I don't care what they say to us about it. My goodness gracious, we rebuilt Europe after WWII using the very same fuel that they're complaining about. And no, I'm not going to wear a sweater in my house and turn down the thermostat. No, I'm not going to buy a little piddly car. I want an SUV and the fuel to run it. Dick Cheney was right in his speech. Conserving is not going to get us anywhere. Getting more fuel supplies will. And why should we hard-working Americans who give foreign aid be apologetic to other countries for using the fuel that we pay for?
I THINK it's time for a change to traffic laws. I think that traffic fines should be variable to the amount of money you make. The rich can speed and run lights as much as they'd like what's a $100 ticket to them? Someone who only makes $100 a week a single ticket will break them. It's time for a switch to a plan like Sweden has, where the more you make, the more you pay.
IN RESPONSE to Rita Counts' letter, "Fines don't cover resulting costs after pollution": One should read the Ste. Genevieve Herald. One will see that the community and company are going through great efforts to protect the environment. The Herald claims that there will be a 2,000-acre buffer around the plant. There is also a set size that the quarry can be at any given time. This means the company will be replacing what it has removed from the earth.
RECENTLY, THE paper stated that there were more mothers 17 and younger. I believe parents need to be more responsible for their children. It is much better to teach all children abstinence rather than to rely upon either birth control or abortion. It won't be long until there will not be enough land for people to live and have jobs as long as the population continues to grow.
