Bring back the jobs

THE RAG trade moved to China for cheap labor, taking away U.S. workers' jobs. Now that Americans are getting wise and not buying their Chinese imports, these ragmen are getting legislators to offer tax breaks on clothes. How manipulative can you get? Bring back those jobs to Americans. Then they might buy the clothes.

Elephant on a leash

THE GALL of some people. They lead their dogs to your home, let them do their mess on your lawn, then brag about always having their dogs on a leash and how they hate people who let their animals run loose. I wish I had a cow or an elephant to lead to their house. Maybe they'd get the message.

It's a speed trap

I DON'T think anyone blames the police for issuing tickets on Highway 74. I'm opposed to the low speed limit on that highway, but it's the way they do it that people object to. They hide out around the corner. You can't tell me that's to prevent accidents or to enforce the law. It's just to make money for the city.

Those Easter bonnets

I HAD the pleasure of eating the delicious Easter brunch at the Holiday Inn and seeing the ladies in their Easter hats. Vi Keys was in her perky Easter bonnet, plus the hostess, servers and cashiers and a few of the diners. What a beautiful tradition to see the return of the Easter bonnet.

Thanks for billfold

I LOST my billfold in the Target parking lot in Cape Girardeau. Someone turned it in, and nothing was missing. I just wanted to say thank you to the person who found my billfold and turned it in. I appreciate it very much.

What a surprise

GEE, GAS prices are going through the roof. There's all these oil men in the White House. What a surprise.

Misdirected spending

I SEE we've still got Dale Nitzschke on the university payroll, but we don't seem to have enough rooms to let the students have a choice. Why is it we can spend money on everything but keeping the college in decent condition? Forget the River Campus and take care of what you're supposed to: educating the children.

Combine the jobs

I NOTICED in the paper where both our fire and police chief are leaving employment in Cape. I think now would be a good time for the city council and city manager to look at combining these two jobs and having one chief over both departments. This is basically an administrative position, and I don't see why one man couldn't handle both jobs to save the city a tremendous amount of money. I also believe they could get a man who's qualified enough to do the job for both, and you'd still have a good assistant chief in both departments to help carry on the day-to-day activities in both departments.

Lots of auto dangers

I THINK cell-phone users who make calls in their automobiles should be left alone. I really don't think it affects their driving worse than anybody else's driving. I get reckless from time to time. I eat while driving. There's all kinds of things going on in automobiles. It seems like discrimination for cell-phone users.

Don't wait until too late

THE REV. Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and the NAACP should live in South Cape for awhile and observe the environment of drugs, drunks and vandals before they come here after a confrontation, which will one day occur when decent people in law enforcement try to take back our neighborhood and streets. This is a cesspool where businesses can't grow and where families can't flourish. It's too late to come here later with a march of racial rhetoric whining about police brutality, racial profiling, unfair laws and no community involvement, and then go home in a limousine. I was brought up in this area by two parents with values who left as it was taken over by people who trash everything.
