Recycling disclaimers

ON THE Opinion page, it says that Cape Girardeau's recycling continues to grow. It does continue to grow. People have been putting their recyclables in business trash containers and have been doing so for a number of years. We've watched them dump on the weekends, and that's illegal, but nobody's done anything about it. Cape residents did not warm to the recycling notion as your editorial claims. It's mandatory because of city-imposed limits. Anytime you say something isn't mandatory, there's something else behind it.

Treat us like dodos

MARTHA STEWART, Oprah Winfrey and others seem to think we're a bunch of dodos. They get supposed experts on their panels, then they interrupt the experts to tell them what we should know. They need to either let the experts tell it or forget the experts and tell it themselves, if they're so smart.

Playing chicken

THE OTHER evening there were three children at the intersection of Louisiana and Whitener playing chicken, running from one side of the street to the other as cars came by. If some driver hit those children, what defense would the driver have?

Preserve the union

MAY THE Republican Party be 100 percent united to prevent the Democrats from standing the Constitution on its head. May all the energies of the Republican Party be devoted to preserving our democracy, our traditional heritage values and our constitutional form of government from all enemies within and without the United States. This effort calls for complete Republican unity. President Bush will gallantly lead our country and the preservation of our democracy and values.

No comparison

YES, CITY street workers do a lot of hard work, but there is no excuse for a couple of city workers to stand around for an hour and a half doing nothing, especially when they're being paid with our tax dollars. And there's a huge difference between what they do at 2 o'clock in the morning when it's snowing and what they do when they stand around doing nothing.

Great performance

"OKLAHOMA," PUT on by the Notre Dame students, has got to be the best ever. The singing, dancing and acting were all superb. That's the way to go, Cindy Kane. You get more out of those students than anybody I know. Thank you so much.

It's for the kids

I JUST came back from the Schnucks Easter egg hunt. I would like to say thank you to all the sponsors. It was a very nice gesture on your part. I would also like to say that I saw more maturity exhibited by some of the 2- and 3-year-olds than I did in some parents. Folks, it's for the kids. Let's remember that so we don't spoil it again.

Great blood drive

I AM a proud grandmother of all our young men and women at Central High School who so proudly and willingly gave blood. I want to say thank you. They are all wonderful students whether they gave or not.

We'll keep spying

CHINA WANTS us to stop flying over international waters to look at their nation and see what they're doing. Are they willing to guarantee without any consequence that they will pull out all Chinese spies from the United States and all other facilities in the world? I think not.

Keep prices even

IT NEVER fails that every time a holiday comes up, the gas prices always go up. So I'm looking for the gas to stay up at least until Memorial Day, and then it'll go back down like they're doing us a favor. Why can't they just leave it at a reasonable price and be done with it? They're still making gobs of money, so what's the big deal?
