Need more protection

I LIVE in the Fruitland fire district and still pay the highest premiums for insurance because neither of the fire district's stations are within five miles of my property. My neighbors and I were told that because this district is mainly farmland, the district cannot afford to build or equip a third station. Now I learn the district is willing to spend $247,000 to help Nordenia build a half-million-dollar fire complex. What kind of deal is this? Isn't Nordenia still in East Cape Girardeau County's district? If this district has that much money available, why don't I have adequate fire protection?

But he got away

GARY RUST recently wrote that he was at a hotel which was hosting a large gathering of Democrats. I used to reject arguments that the Democrats had become incompetent and wimpish, but I no longer do since Rust was obviously able to escape the place in one piece.

Tough times?

I'M CONFUSED. President Bush says baseball has fallen on "pretty tough times." The average baseball salary is about $2 million. I made a whopping $11,000 last year working for a local business. I wish I had those kinds of tough times myself. What a joke.

Alive and well

SOMEONE ASKED Speak Out readers where all the "smart Republicans" were with all the answers. They are alive and well and right here in Southeast Missouri. Bush won. Get over it.

Recession is over

CONSUMER CONFIDENCE is on the rise again. Other economic indicators don't look bad either. Thus the Bush recession is over. Now can we forget about the tax cut, promoted by Bush as a way to deal with the recession?

E-mail on automatic

I HATE to disillusion the Speak Out caller who claimed to have received three e-mails from a U.S. senator, but big deal. I have received many. They are all what are called auto-generated responses. In computerese, that means they were sent automatically and say, in essence, nothing. I love them.

Look at schools

TO THE community of Jackson: It is time to wake up and realize what is going on in this town and in the schools. I am a student at Jackson High School. I am sure many of the people in the community would be very surprised at all the things that go on in our schools. Ask around and you may start finding out more than you want. Everyone wants to think we have the best school. Every school has its problems, and Jackson is no exception. It is time to start facing the problems going on here. I am just your average student, not just some rebellious teen lashing out. I am just one of a few who can see things the way they are: corrupt.

Swept under rug

MANY PEOPLE in Jackson seem to have the attitude that whatever the members of their community do is excusable. The school district loves to sweep things under the rug that it doesn't want the public to know. As a parent of kids in the district, I know firsthand that when students mention incidents like the recent ones, the teachers get angry at them for talking about it among themselves. Hiding the problem will not make it go away. Young people need to talk about things that upset them instead of being scolded. The students' well-being is more important than Jackson's good reputation.
