I AGREE with the Speak Out comments on the term African-American. If you're born in the United States or have become a naturalized citizen, then you are American. Forget the African prefix and be a real American, not just half of one. I'm not prejudiced when I say this. Black or white, we are only Americans. So why not act like one instead of forever saying you're African-American just to get noticed?...

Not half-American

I AGREE with the Speak Out comments on the term African-American. If you're born in the United States or have become a naturalized citizen, then you are American. Forget the African prefix and be a real American, not just half of one. I'm not prejudiced when I say this. Black or white, we are only Americans. Religious left?

WHEN THE conservative Pat Robertson supported the Republicans, all we heard about was the religious right. Now we have the liberals Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson supporting the Democrats. So do we refer to them as the religious left?

Ashcroft is pro-life

I'M CALLING about the nomination of John Ashcroft as attorney genera. I think it's a wonderful idea. He's a good man, and I like his pro-life stance. He's been unfairly savaged in the media because of his pro-life views. I find it rather interesting that the same people that are pro-choice are the ones out there in Potosi every time there's an execution holding candles and saying how wrong this is because it contradicts what they believe. They're saying it's wrong to kill somebody who's guilty of murder or rape, but it's completely right to kill somebody who hasn't even had a chance to do anything wrong yet because they haven't been born. They're innocent.

Trust the people

I CAN still remember candidate Bush attempting to differentiate himself from the opposition by saying how he trusted the people. The people voted to remove John Ashcroft from public office. Bush promptly ignored the people and appointed Ashcroft to an even more important position than the one he was voted out of. "I trust the people"? What a phony. What a farce.

Not affordable

HOW CAN the Cape Girardeau Police Department spend $43,569 to conduct a survey when they can't find enough money to give the officers and city employees a raise or find enough officers to safely cover the streets or get the equipment the officers need?

Poor scheduling

I JUST have to wonder about the common sense of whoever sets up Southeast Missouri State University's basketball schedule. Coach Garner has commented many times that the crowd at the Show Me Center makes a big difference in motivating his team. Our arch-rival is Murray State, which we played Thursday night. But guess what? School wasn't even in session. The students weren't here. Granted, a lot of community members went to the game, but we didn't come near to filling up the center the way we do when school is in session. It seems more sensible to play our biggest rivals when we know we can get a big student turnout. The community can see that this makes sense. Why can't the people whose job it is to schedule games see that this makes sense?

Restored integrity

GEORGE W. has restored my faith in mankind. He has restored integrity to the White House. Thank God.

Thanks for the help

THANKS AND God bless the very nice man who helped the elderly couple when their car stalled on Perryville Road. Your kindness will be long appreciated. Thank you.
