JOHN ASHCROFT has been appointed attorney general to the dismay of abortion groups, homosexual groups and civil-rights activists and liberals in general because, of all things, of his Christian beliefs. It's all right to have Janet Reno who has disgraced herself in public and personal choices as her boss did, but to have a decent man of God in office is so terrible to some groups in our society. I support Ashcroft 100 percent. They couldn't have found a finer human being for this position.
THANK YOU, thank you, thank you, Missourians, for voting in Mel Carnahan as your next U.S. senator. Because of you, we have John Ashcroft as attorney general. What a very merry Christmas! Thank you so much.
I'M GLAD to see the Democrats in Speak Out are taking the election so well. No vicious attacks or hate statements. No reference to bias in the Southeast Missourian or its columnists. They all seem to be on the bandwagon of the new president, minus a few. This shows forgiveness, respect and character. Thanks for being all good losers. That takes courage. I'm sure they don't mean it when they say Bush is not my president, because anyone who would accept a sex pervert as a president should accept anyone.
I SEE now that David Limbaugh's on the air just like his brother, Rush. And he says that he fully believes what he writes and what he says. I feel sorry for him because he has Scrooge in his heart all the year. I have not read one thing he has written that makes me feel good. So I've gotten to where I don't read it anymore because there's nothing but negativism. If that's all we can spew in this world, then it's a sad day for us all. I really feel sorry for David. He's become his brothers clone.
THE DEMOCRATS are already saying there's nothing wrong with the economy, though it's in a free fall with Bill Clinton still president. The Republicans are going to ruin it, they clamor. It's just like Clinton's filth and perversion in the White House. They don't want blame for anything. They want credit for everything.
DID YOU ever think these people who are fussing so about John Ashcroft being a Christian man are scared because he's going to be attorney general? Did you ever think maybe God is going to take over this country again? Sounds good to me.
I READ the article in the paper about all the police officers leaving Cape Girardeau. We really need to look into that. It's kind of disturbing whenever your police department is jumping off a sinking ship. Is it the police chief who is the problem, or the city manager? Somebody needs to get to the bottom of the problem and keep decent law enforcement in our town.
MY JOB requires me to go all over town, and I think that the street department is doing a fantastic job, considering the miles of streets the crews have to cover in a relatively short time and the terribly cold weather we've had.
I GOT my gas bill, and it was totally out of sight. I think they're taking an unfair advantage of us poor folks. I am seriously thinking of converting to electric heat.
I WOULD like to inform all hunters who think they have the right to hunt on railroad tracks that they are trespassing on private property owned by the railroad. The railroad does not want anyone on the tracks hunting. You could receive a citation for trespassing. To even walk on the tracks is trespassing.
THINK ABOUT the 94-year-old woman who made the statement that she'd rather die than live under Bush's administration. Figure out what year she was born. She was a young woman during Herbert Hoover's time. She knows what it's all about. She's one of the few pioneers left who remembers the true Republican administrations. She knows what its all about. I'm 65, and it took me until 1960 to really find out how the Republicans are. I found out the hard way.
WHY IS it that it's only the black race that has racial problems with leaders, crying foul, protesting, boycotting, marching to Washington and suing everyone? Other minorities such as Latin Americans and Orientals have about 1 percent of the problem brought on by being blown out of proportion by the leadership which has drained and demoralized and spread hate in the black community. What a disgraceful shame that Jesse Jackson and others have created a wall between the races using Martin Luther King's name as their mentor. It's a shame he's not here to rebuke them.
A JOKE. That's what the city's road work on Broadway is. If they think what they've been doing to the road over the past six months is helping, they are horribly wrong. I hate to be the one to burst their bubble, but it is only making a bigger problem than there ever was in the beginning. Each time I drive on the road I hope it will all be finished, but that wish never comes true. It just seems to keep getting worse. Please, for our car's sakes and ours, fix the road soon.
I'VE LIVED in Missouri four years now, and I am not thrilled at all by John Ashcroft. I'm a fairly liberal person, and I looked around for other choices to vote for, but I ended up voting for Ashcroft anyway even though I am pro-choice.
ONE HAS to remember that Bill Clinton didn't have a mandate either when he became president, because he didn't get an overwhelming majority of the popular vote.
IF WE'RE headed into a recession as they say, it must be the Democrats' doing. If they had us in such good shape as some might suggest, then George W. Bush would be able to roll through for four or eight years as Clinton has. It was the Republicans who had Clinton in such good shape, and now this is just one more mess the Republicans have to clean up.
I AGREE with the caller from Jackson who doesn't want his street plowed. We get along fine in Cape until about the third day when the snow plows come and plow us under. Not everyone has the strength or the kind of shovel it takes to throw it back in the streets.
I SAW in the Southeast Missourian about the little boy whose mother took him back to Cuba and his father was still here in the United States. Wouldn't it be nice if the lawyers who stepped in so wholeheartedly to try to help Elian get back home in our country would also step in and donate their help to this father?
I WOULD like to thank the person who, at the Taco Bell on William Street, bought my family's dinner. Whenever we got up to the window, we didn't have to pay for it, because someone already had. It was nice to know that there are people like that out there who are still willing to do stuff for others.
