I AGREE that teachers do not dress as well as they used to years ago. Parents also didn't do such a horrible job of parenting. Back then, teachers did not have to worry about changing a student's diaper, breaking up bloody fist fights or cleaning your own classroom because of lack of funding for custodial help. Let's face it. Teachers wear what they can afford to wear. We also need to question the clothing parents let their children wear to school.
THE BLOOD of the steer that died at the rodeo is on the hands not only of the cowboy, but the crowd that patronizes such barbaric, prehistoric spectacles.
I AM bemused and befuddled. I keep hearing from folks defending the notion of privatizing Social Security as a way to save it. But even President Bush now recognizes that privatization only makes the economic problems of Social Security worse. So they suck everyone in with a non-solution to a non-crisis and then reveal the truth. I'm just not buying it. I don't want my retirement security to rest with the decisions of Enron and MCI executives -- heads of companies that are bankrupt and have taken millions of Americans down with them. Of course, the executives at Enron and MCI are still doing fine, thank you very much. It's the workers and investors who are out on the street.
IF THE Southeast Missourian wanted to save money, it could limit the Monday edition to Scott Moyer's column and Chris Pagano's Faces & Places page. Both are a breath of fresh air. Anything and everything else in the Monday edition, in my opinion, is just filler.
SOMEONE COMMENTED that if you can't find a job in Cape Girardeau, you should learn to do something that is valuable to a prospective employer. I live in Cape Girardeau and can't find a job. I send my resume every day to numerous companies. How can you expect to be valuable to each prospective employer?
I'D LIKE to know what our governor's trying to do to those on Medicaid. I'm a quadriplegic in a power chair. If that chair goes down, I can't go anywhere. I can't afford to repair the chair. I think it's time we turned the tide around and get the rich out of office and put the poor in office, because the rich sure don't know what they're doing.
THIS IS regarding Cape annexation. I live on County Road 620 just north of Cape Girardeau and east of I-55. I've been hearing that Cape is going to annex the area along Country Route 620 and County Route 618 into the city. Can they provide better police protection? There is a fire station just 2 1/2 miles down from County Road 621. While I'm writing this, I look out my window and see a sheriff's car driving by. What more do you want? One thing we don't need is more taxes. Why pay more when we have everything we need?
I WANT to thank the two young men at Lowe's and my friend who helped me get my wallet back after I left it at Lowe's. The young men's names are David and James. They were very helpful, and without them I may not have gotten my wallet back. My friend Julie also helped me. I appreciate honest people.
I MAY be elderly. I may be dressed comfortably. But please don't treat me as if I can't afford to shop, especially in your store.
IT AMAZES me that farmers gripe about government payments, then someone like David Herbst brings new opportunities for farmers and the farmers gripe and don't want to take a chance on alternative crops that may make more money. We need more farmers like Herbst.
SOME KIDS are not ready for kindergarten, so parents should provide the right guidance to assist them whether at home or by paying for a preschool. It is not the taxpayers' job to be sure a child is ready for school. It is not the schools' job to pick up where a parent is lacking. If a parent is not doing his job or doesn't have the time to do it right, maybe they shouldn't be a parent or should ask for help. Taxpayers' money should not go to raising other people's children.
I KNOW about three dozen if not more Central High School students who did not get pulled over during the recent roadblock and could have gotten several tickets. The police randomly pulled over students. How can that not be considered profiling? They either need to pull over every student or don't pull over anyone. Seat belts save lives, but they also kill. Wearing seat belts should not be a law. Not wearing them doesn't harm anyone besides the person who is not wearing them. So why try to make people wear them?
I WONDER if the person who was so offended by the death of the steer at the rodeo would have been just as offended if it had been a cowboy whose neck was broken? Spectators witnessed a very rare event. Rodeo animals are considered athletes and are treated very well. Humans are severely injured in rodeos more often than animals.
I COMMEND Southern Illinois University-Carbondale for its intent to study and then act on alcohol abuse problems. It's too bad that it took the death of a student to get the university moving on an issue that is widespread across all college campuses. Southeast Missouri State University officials need to act on what SIU is doing rather than waiting to react when one of our students dies. Many of the campus groups plan weekend parties and will say that they provide a sober driver. They skirt the issue that they are usually hauling under-age drunk students.
I DON'T know whether it is Jackson or the highway department that is responsible for the section of Wedekind Street between the divided U.S. 61 (just past Center Junction), but it is sorely in need of total overhaul and has been that way since last summer.
EMPLOYERS WHO complain about employees who read the Bible on the job remind me of the temple's money changers.
