I'VE read Peter Kinder's recommendation for lowering the minimum wage for carpenters and construction workers in Joplin, Mo. I would suggest that Mr. Kinder start by being charitable. He should reduce his salary to minimum wage. Kinder, wages

I'VE read Peter Kinder's recommendation for lowering the minimum wage for carpenters and construction workers in Joplin, Mo. I would suggest that Mr. Kinder start by being charitable. He should reduce his salary to minimum wage.

Close loopholes

I wish that Washington, especially the news reporters, would wake up and realize that the income tax rates are not the reason that so many high-income people don't pay much in taxes. It is because of all the loopholes. What they need to do is get rid of the loopholes and then start looking at the tax rate. But until the loopholes are closed, you're playing Dixie in the wind.

Fair wage

I would like to see Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder live on $7.25 an hour, and I don't think that a fair wage is wrong for anybody.

Jackson coach

I am embarrassed by and ashamed of the way that Jackson school officials handled the matter with Coach Van Hitt. A longtime member of the Jackson school system should have been given more consideration, kindness and discretion.

Deer problem

I had four beautiful trees in my yard that were planted three years ago that are now all dead because of the deer rubbing up against them. I try to make my property look nice, but the deer will eat everything, even rose bushes. I have tried spreading clips of human hair and bars of soap, but nothing keeps them away. We need help.

Cut spending

I think it's totally ridiculous that Congress is trying to pass some kind of legislation that restricts our spending or helps improve our economy. But it won't take effect until one, two, three, four, five or 10 years from now. That's ridiculous. If they can't do something now, they aren't going to do anything. What they need to do is cut out some of the spending that the government does.

Missy Kitty

WHAT a pleasure to read a new columnist on the editorial page. It was always great to read about Missy Kitty. Now she seems to have her own column. Undoubtedly, she'll be syndicated soon as she gains national popularity. I am voting for her next November.

Christian nation

I was sent an email saying that President Obama had said that the U.S. was no longer a Christian nation and that he had canceled the White House ceremony for the National Day of Prayer this year. I wish people would research things before they send out mass emails. President Obama said we are no longer just a Christian nation. There is a big difference. Wasn't freedom of religion the reason our nation was founded?

Skilled jobs

THERE are no skilled jobs anymore. Computers and machines do the work. As a consequence, the unions are weak. So we need income redistribution to provide proportional parenting of income. If robots are going to do chores for man, will they move fast enough to be efficient and productive.

Jackson coaches

THANK goodness the Jackson School Board took the initiative to relieve two coaches. You need a strong, rock-solid foundation to build a program, and the two coaches they relieved didn't have the background to do that. As a former coach myself and state championship holder and coaching as far as football, I thought it was inappropriate for Mr. Stover, the board member, to make the comments about how they should keep the coach. It's not fair to the students, the community or the taxpayers to have a losing program, and Jackson has a high quality student body to make a football team great.

Discovery Playhouse

YOU may not believe me, but I'm convinced that Cape Girardeau has a largely unnoticed and very youthful occupy movement. Every time I drive by it I see increasingly large numbers of children occupying the Discovery Playhouse.

Making bed

IT'S sad that I had to become a senior citizen before it happened, but at least I can say I have finally experienced the most liberating experience one could possibly have while on Earth. I have stopped making the bed.
