Too much expansion

WE HAVE too much urban sprawl. If a city needs to increase in size, perhaps it should go inward and rebuild. One should calculate the cost of further expansion. It may be worthwhile to recalculate the feasibility of rebuilding inner cities, even with buildings now standing.

Wonderful play

CONGRATULATIONS TO the Central High School Red Dagger department on another successful fall play. "The Miracle Worker" was a wonderful production with a powerful message. All of the cast members did a wonderful job, and it was a joy to watch.

Food or fuel?

I WONDER if the day will come when Americans have to choose between food or fuel. I might bet my last falling American dollar on it.

Memorable trip

MY SON went on the pep bus from Jackson Junior High School to the game. He said it was the best part of junior high school so far. Those students made memories they will keep forever. Thank you for getting the buses together.

Plenty of exercise

TO THE person complaining that four hours of running/playing is too much for a 13-year-old: You should be happy your granddaughter is getting a fair share of exercise. Kids can and should get all the exercise they can. Their bodies need it. There are younger children who swim two to three miles a day and do not complain.

High-cost TM

I BELIEVE in meditation, yoga, reiki and many more holistic techniques but have a problem with the cost of the Transcendental Meditation class. Why ask so much when all you need is mat and instructions?

Respect for all veterans

I AM a Vietnam veteran. Please don't suggest that Vietnam veterans have ever forgotten about the Korean War veterans. It was the Vietnam veterans who started the POW/MIA black flag that says, "You are not forgotten." That flag suggests that we never forget any war veteran, including POWs and MIAs, no matter the battle, war or era. This flag speaks to all veterans everywhere to come together as one. It was the Vietnam veteran who was told, early on, "You are not welcome in the VFW because Vietnam wasn't even a war. At best it was considered a police action." It was the Vietnam veterans who stood as brothers against all odds and changed the attitude of the nation over time to honor all veterans equally, even if you weren't in the great war. I have the greatest respect for the Korean War veterans. And to have a Korean War veteran suggest any different is wrong. We all did what we had to do to the best of our ability. And we all must stand as one for all.

From a Vietnam vet

I AM a 100 percent disabled vet of the Vietnam War. I do not go around "crying," as someone suggested. If it weren't for the Vietnam vets, there would not be a Korean War Memorial in Washington, D.C. Many World War II veterans along with the Korean War vets criticized us long after our war was over. I say shame on you.

Too hyper for TM

TRANSCENDENTAL Meditation is a ripoff. I took a course decades ago and had to pay a stiff price to learn what was called a mantra (nonsense word) that I was told would be the key to a successful meditating experience. That myth was debunked by Harvard and other universities that taught it was unnecessary to learn a mantra and that all one had to do was sit quietly and not think about anything twice a day for 20 minutes. Having said that, I failed, because I'm too hyper to sit still that long.

Cultural events

I GET tired of those people who complain about the cost of the River Campus to students. Those of us who send our children to better colleges than Southeast Missouri State University often pay more taxes than anyone else. We deserve to have a place to see cultural events without driving to St. Louis or Memphis.

An honest candidate

I HEARD on C-SPAN that Lou Dobbs might be considering a run for president as an independent. I hope that becomes a reality, because finally we would have an honest candidate who connects with the middle class, something both parties fail to do.

Inconsiderate burning

I LIVE in Jackson. When I come home at night my house is surrounded by smoke. Even inside, my house smells of smoke. Since the burning season started my lungs burn, my nose bleeds and I have headaches and difficulty breathing. I am having to take more medication than I'd like to. It smells like someone is burning trash in with the leaves, which is illegal. I have to keep my house closed up when I'd love to open windows and air it out. It's miserable. Fall is my favorite season, but I dread coming home to my own house because of my inconsiderate neighbors.
