Preacher first

WHILE everyone is bashing some of today's religious leaders and denouncing Christianity, let us be reminded that the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream was one of a man of God, hailed as a civil rights leader but called as a preacher first.

Get the message

WITH the election to fill Ted Kennedy's seat over, I have to wonder if the White House and the Democratic government that controls Congress finally get the message that you cannot treat a two-thirds majority of U.S. citizen as second-class citizens in their own country. They have to understand that there should be no special rights or privileges because you used your power and influence to buy votes to get Barack Obama elected into the highest office in the land.

Suffering here

I feel sorry for the people in Haiti, but we are suffering in our nation. People here cannot find work. Maybe we need to have another tea party.

School dress

I'M upset with the way schools allow teenage and preteen girls to dress. Many of them look like little more than what the Urban Dictionary refers to as "prostitots."

Relief effort

THE Haitian earthquake is a tragedy. Why is it when a disaster occurs, the U.S. is responsible for the relief effort? Where were the French, Russian, Saudi, Italian and other developed countries' relief efforts during the the hurricanes in Florida and Texas, Hurricane Katrina and the terrorist attacks on 9/11? The answer: The rest of the world despises America, except when in need. For once, I agree with President Obama. It is time for the U.S. to back down from being a world superpower and spend more tax dollars here where we can see some benefit from the government taking our money.

Unreliable experts

I listened to the Cape Girardeau School Board and the expert who said we must demolish Franklin Elementary School. I watched the Vikings and Dallas game. The experts said Brett Favre was a has-been and Dallas would win. So much for the experts.

Wonderful doctor

IT was great that you had an article about Dr. Glenn on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. I've taken my kids to see Dr. Glenn, I've gone to see Dr. Glenn at Immediate Healthcare. He is a wonderful doctor, and when he tells you something, you believe him and follow his instructions because he's doing the very best for his patients. It doesn't matter what race the patients are, and it doesn't matter what race the doctor is. Dr. Glenn is wonderful, and that is the true spirit of Martin Luther King's dream. We judge him on the outcome of his work, not on his race.

Voting yes

TO all who complain that the dropout rate has not improved and, therefore, you're not going to vote for the bond issue: Apparently you didn't read the Jan. 10 Southeast Missourian article about school grades. The dropout rate for Cape Girardeau went from 13.2 to 7.2, a six-point improvement. Dropout rates in Jackson, Scott City and Missouri as a whole were worse. If you want to vote no, vote against all the waste that you see around the when things could be made better. Vote no if you want on the bond issue, but you will be voting against our kids, against school improvement, against our future. Vote yes if you really care about what happens to our kids.
