Cape Girardeau will be buzzing this weekend as Southeast Missouri State University hosts homecoming. With the forecast showing high temperatures in the 60s and sunshine for the next three days, the weekend festivities should have an ideal environment.
Here are just a few of the events on the schedule:
* Today is Red Friday in Southeast Missouri, and the community is encouraged to wear red in support of the Redhawks. Red Fridays are celebrated every Friday before a Southeast home football or basketball game.
* Tonight at 6:30, the Copper Dome Society and Merit Award Recognition Dinner will be held at the Show Me Center.
* Saturday the All-Alumni Breakfast starts at 7:30 a.m. in the Wehking Alumni Center. This year's Distinguished Service Award recipients to be recognized are Terry Benassi, Dwayne Hickman, Grace Hoover, Dan Jennings and Jon K. Rust, publisher of the Southeast Missourian.
* The annual parade starts at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Capaha Park. The parade route will travel east on Broadway to Main Street.
* Following the parade, at 11 a.m. tailgating celebrations will begin. Kickoff for the football game is at 1 p.m., but make sure to get to the stadium early to see the U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute Team jump into Houck Stadium during the pregame festivities.
We welcome the many Southeast alumni who are back in Cape Girardeau this weekend. While there are plenty of events to attend, Homecoming is just as much about reconnecting with old friends.
