There's good news coming out of Washington, D.C. No, it's not about politics. It's about college basketball.

Former Scott County Central standout Otto Porter is gaining national attention as his Georgetown Hoyas continue their impressive season. After scoring a career-high 33-points in a recent game against Syracuse, Porter led the Hoyas to a 79-78 win over Connecticut with a game-winning layup in double overtime Wednesday night.

Individually, Porter is well positioned for the next level of play. The sophomore recently was included in the top 10 of the NBA mock draft. Porter, who opted not to play AAU basketball in high school, is described by his coach John Thompson III as humble.

We're thrilled to see Porter succeed at the collegiate level. He has an incredible talent, and we wish him, and the Hoyas, well as the college basketball season moves closer to the national tournament.

Porter's alma mater also is making news on the basketball court. On Tuesday the Braves boys basketball team won a sectional contest against Risco. The team now moves on to the quarterfinals with a 1 p.m. Saturday contest against Eminence, Mo. The game will be played at Bearcat Event Center in Dexter, Mo.

Scott County Central has had a good deal of success in recent years. The Braves won four consecutive state championships, and appeared in the final four for five straight years. We wish them well Saturday as they seek to continue this trend.
