Most people have watched enough cop shows on TV to think we know how the police do their jobs. Some of us have heard from relatives or friends about their encounters with police. Some of us had either called upon police for assistance or have been the targets of police investigations and summonses.

But do we really know all the functions of a modern police department? Do we really know what the police do when they aren't involved in the kinds of activities portrayed on TV shows -- which is most of the time? Do we really understand how an effective police department prevents crime as well as arresting those who commit illegal acts?

For the past 10 years the Citizens Police Academy has offered Cape Girardeau residents an opportunity to learn first-hand about how the police do their work.

During the academy, representatives of the Cape Girardeau Police Department meet with attendees to talk about their responsibilities and answer questions. In some cases demonstrations are presented. The goal is to provide a better understanding of and appreciation for the work the department does.

The next academy begins Feb. 15 and continues through March 29 with weekly two-hour sessions at 6 p.m. Anyone could benefit by attending. Previous academy attendees can attest to the fact that they have a different perspective of the police department and its many functions.
