To the editor:In the past few months there has been a lot of searching of school district records, board minutes from around the turn of the century and on-site discoveries of what the old Central High School (L.J. Schultz School) might have looked like originally. Much of this is being done to document and process the application for state and national historic designation in preserving the building for future generations.
We are asking the public for assistance in locating original building plans. We asked for help once before when the process started for renovation and preserving the Marquette Hotel. Because of families with a heritage in construction, many of you brought forth plans your grandfathers used in their various building trades. We know plans for the school are out there, perhaps in someone's attic or basement, and we want you to know that you will be contributing to the preservation of your family's participation and pride in one of Cape Girardeau's notable landmarks.
We would gladly make copies of these plans and return the originals to you. And we would welcome anything else you might be able to contribute: old pictures, material bills of sale, anything connected to the early days of this school building. We would appreciate hearing from you in making this happen.
Please bring what you have found on the old Central High School to my attention at our office at 230 N. Sprigg St. Thank you.
THOMAS M. MEYER, Cape Girardeau
