For many high school seniors, the last few months before graduation are filled with plans for the summer and goals for entering college, the military or workforce. But for Cape Girardeau Central High School student Molly Kinder, college, though in her plans, will have to wait. For now, she's looking to spend a year abroad as a missionary.
Kinder said the inspiration for her commitment came from reading the book "Kisses from Katie," which chronicles the journey of Katie J. Davis, who took a year before college to teach in Uganda. She added that Young Life leader Rika Friedrich also has been a positive influence.
Starting in September, Kinder will begin training with YWAM, an acronym for Youth With A Mission. "It's a huge organization with schools all over the world, called ‘discipleship training schools,'" Kinder said in a recent Southeast Missourian story.
While the passion is there, Kinder is still working to fund the trip. In addition to support from friends and family, she's using her talent for making scarves to help raise money. Based on Jeremiah 31:3, a passage from the Bible that talks of God's everlasting love, Kinder calls her scarves "Infinite Love Scarves." They are being sold for $20 or two for $35. To purchase one, visit www.etsy.com/shop/infinitelovescarves or email kollyminder@gmail.com.
It's heartwarming to see young people like Molly Kinder work to make a difference. Her heart for others is inspiring, and we wish her well in this trip and future studies.
