Marriage is a serious undertaking, and a number of Cape Girardeau churches are working to ensure that marriages start out on the right foot.
About 30 of the city's 45 churches have agreed that couples will complete premarital counseling as part of Marriage Savers, a national program that has spread to 51 communities nationwide.
Cape Girardeau is the only city in Missouri with a community Marriage Savers policy -- but it won't be the last. Perryville is close to adopting the program, and local representatives are working with other neighboring communities as well.
Divorce not only hurts individuals. Broken families have been blamed for a number of society's ills. Cape Girardeau churches should be proud of their role in working to strengthen and preserve couples and families.
