To the editor:

The new Art Academy at Southeast Missouri State University caught my attention as being one of the finest means of offering art education to our young generation today who have desires and images to express but are at a loss in knowing how to express them, especially without being offered this fine opportunity.

The various art teachers are to be commended for opening such an important step in our educational field.

I commend Katherine Ellinger Smith, the academy's director, for setting her first class of young artists to using their skills in sketching vases, bowls and the like. Art is a growing thing, and what a wonderful opening this affords those who have always wanted to become involved in art but have been intimidated by the lack of skill.

Art can be expressed in so many ways, and this proves to be one of the finest opportunities yet to achieve that purpose.

I took art under the direction of Helen Bedford at Southeast in 1928, and it opened many paths for me.
