To the editor:
Cape Girardeau police deserve much credit for keeping mugging or street robbery of citizens at a minimum. When I moved from Scott City to Cape Girardeau, I was apprehensive about mugging, but I have since walked to the store and other places many times without any danger.
I was mugged in Memphis during a block walk. Two kids ran up and stuck their hands in my pockets. One of them go my cash. They tore my pants in the process. I couldn't very well case them while holding up my pants.
I lived in Chicago for about a year in the 1980s and got on ABC's "Nightline" after trying to organize a neighborhood against street crime or mugging. The neighborhood had about a thousand muggings a year.
People here should be grateful that they don't have to put up with things that are common in other areas, thanks to good police protection.
