To the editor:
Some people believe that by strapping on a gun they will be safe from violence. In reality, some people will be putting their life on the line, because they will have this false feeling of safety.
I'm calling it a false feeling, because does anyone who has given any real thought to the possible consequences really think people with as little as 12 hours of training with a gun will be ready to take on a real criminal?
Remember, the good person is going to be the one who has to make up his mind to pull the trigger. The criminal already has his mind made up.
It takes more than aiming a gun at a person and pulling the trigger. It takes mental toughness. A person with a conscience will freeze. The criminal will not.
If your are one of the few who doesn't hesitate and pulls the triggers and kills or wounds the perpetrator, then your next step could be to prove your innocence. Sometimes it's hard to prove your innocent.
There also needs to be more preparation built into this law to protect children. Twelve hours of training is not enough to prepare some people for the safety and responsibility to carry a gun.
If you really think we are read for this new law and you as a permit holder would be ready to take on the responsibility, then vote your conscience. You have that right. I wonder when children will have rights to be protected from mistakes made by adults.
