As chairman of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board as well as the Parks Foundation Board, I have had the great pleasure to work with a number of different groups and organizations that all have a few common goals. These goals are very simple: To make Cape Girardeau a better place to live and continue to create opportunities for our kids.

No group better exemplifies this than the Cape Area Youth Soccer Association. Recently, I had the occasion to attend a dedication of the new stadium soccer field that has been constructed at Shawnee Park Sports Complex. Unlike other groups that are constantly looking for funding and assistance, CAYSA has created an organization that is financially very strong and has underwritten the majority of the costs within the organization.

Over the past four years, CAYSA has contributed nearly $150,000 to the growth and improvement of the soccer fields at Shawnee Park Sports Complex. The collaborative effort with the city of Cape Girardeau has made for one of the finest soccer complexes in the Midwest. The success CAYSA has enjoyed is attributed to the dedication and commitment of numerous folks. In particular, Howard Aslinger, Alice Temm, Del Elfrink, and CAYCA president Chuck Meyer have given tirelessly of their time and have finally realized a dream that started nearly 15 years ago.
