Monday is Labor Day, that holiday set aside for honoring honest toil in the earning of our bread. Honoring labor goes back to at least Biblical times. The Lord said in the New Testament, "Come unto me all who labor and are heavy laden."
The rise of the trade union movement is one of the great chapters of the American experience. Free and independent labor unions are hallmarks of a free society, among the chief distinguishing features between free societies and totalitarian ones.
Of course Labor Day also signals the unofficial departure of summer as eyes turn toward cooler days and nights, lower utility bills, football games and all the coming delights of autumn.
Happy Labor Day to one and all.
