A few weeks ago a Southeast Missourian story on the Tuesday health page caught our eye. More specifically, it was a comment from a local physican who said for every 70 women who receive a physical, only 30 men receive similar medical care.
The story looked at the importance of having an annual physical and having appropriate tests for age and gender.
Dr. Erica Gibson, a primary-care physician at Saint Francis Medical Center, said men are focused on work and the emphasis is "to not complain." Dr. Jamie Harrison, a physician for SoutheastHEALTH Primary Care, noted that wives are typically a primary reason that a man receives a checkup. Married men tend to live longer.
Taking responsibility for one's health is key. This means having a good diet, exercising and treating any chronic health concerns. Nevertheless, it's important that everyone -- men and women -- touch base with a primary care physician regularly.
This community has a wealth of health care resources. There are excellent fitness centers and professionals who can help with an exercise program or diet. Also there are many free options, such as walking trails and bycycling.
If you're staying on top of your health, good job. If not, we encourage you to take time to see a doctor and begin a more active and healthy lifestyle.
