Habitat project gets big boost from university volunteers

Habitat for Humanity has had an aggressive building program in Cape Girardeau the past few years.

The latest project, which will provide a home for a couple with four children, is a bit different. The shell of the house will be constructed within a two-week period by more than 300 volunteers in the 900 block of busy Broadway and then transported to its permanent location on a lot on North Main Street, where the interior will be finished.

Many of the volunteers will be Southeast Missouri State University students. Some of them have been involved in other Habitat projects in Indiana and Alabama. This year, they will donate their efforts to this local project.

This project, called Build Southeast, will require a 12-hour-a-day schedule that will include the university's spring break.

The Build Southeast project kicks off this weekend. Be sure to look for it as you travel along Broadway. And think about becoming a Habitat volunteer.
