To the editor:
Thank you for the Oct. 1 article about the new GED tests.
The Adult Learning Center along with the Missouri Mentoring Program and Caring Communities are located in the old vocational-technical building at 301 N. Clark Ave. The Adult Learning Center did not move to the new Career and Technology Center.
On Oct. 18, a graduation ceremony will be held. We hope all our GED graduates will be able to be present. Invitations have been mailed to all graduates, but some of the invitations are being returned because those graduates no longer reside at those addresses.
In January 2002, the GED tests will arrive. The new tests will measure the outcomes of a four-year program of secondary-school education using secondary-school curriculum standards and standardized assessment practices. The new test will cover the core academic areas of language arts, social studies, science and mathematics. GED candidates will continue to write a timed essay on an assigned topic. There will be increased emphasis on organization, and a new scoring system will be implemented. GED candidates will find more business-related and adult-context information texts on all five of the tests. Calculators, which will be provided, will be allowed on 80 percent of the math test.
We want to encourage anyone who wants to study for the GED tests to enroll at the Adult Learning Center or any of the center's satellite classes in our six-county service area. Additional information may be obtained by calling 334-3669.
