Food bank

Most of us don't know what it's like to be hungry. It's a concept associated often with Third World countries, many of which have been hit hard by natural disasters or other challenges. But there are some people in the United States, even in Cape Girardeau and the surrounding areas, who struggle to put food on the table. Fortunately, organizations like the Southeast Missouri Food Bank are here to help those in need of nourishment.

In 2010, the local food bank received $250,000 in state tax credits through the Neighborhood Assistance Program. The idea is that eligible individuals and businesses will choose to donate to the food bank and in return receive a tax credit of 50 percent of the amount donated.

So far the food bank, which has locations in Cape Girardeau and Sikeston, has received $35,000 in eligible donations resulting in $17,500 worth of tax credits used. With $232,500 in tax credits remaining, those interested are encouraged to contact the food bank by tomorrow's deadline. While not everyone is eligible for the tax credits, Green said that donations are considered a charitable gift and that donations of all kinds -- money, food or other supplies -- are appreciated.
