Dr. Dan Cotner and his trombone have been a fixture at the Capaha Park bandshell for longer than most of us have been alive. Last week, Cotner was recognized at the Cape Girardeau Municipal Band concert for his record achievement -- 74 years of service to the band.

According to band director Ronald Nall, the previous record-holder was Homer Gilbert at 73 years. To recognize Cotner's service, Mayor Harry Rediger presented a proclamation to the longtime musician during the middle of the performance. Appropriately, the night's musical selections featured the trombone.

In addition to his muny band service, Cotner has played an active role in other local music events. Whether playing the organ at church or assisting in a high school theater production, he's been willing to help. This service has gone beyond music. He's been an active member of this community, served in the military and volunteered on medical mission trips. He's a past Spirit of America Award recipient, a recognition given by the Southeast Missourian each summer on July 4.

Congratulations to Cotner on this recognition and to all those who play in local municipal bands. These are wonderful concerts that many in the area enjoy. It's because of people like Cotner, who are dedicated to their musical craft, that we can enjoy these outdoor concerts and sounds of summer.
