Claire Culwell had a rough start to life. Her mother, at the age of 13, became pregnant and chose to have an abortion, not knowing she was carrying twins. One of the twins died in the procedure. Claire, who wasn't known to exist, survived.
When Claire was discovered the pregnancy was too far along for a second abortion. She was born -- and with several disabilities. In a recent Q&A with the Southeast Missourian, she addressed several questions about finding out about the abortion, among other things. Despite the challenges, she's grateful to have lived to tell her story. To read the full interview, go to semissourian.com.
Culwell's story is a powerful one, and her work to encourage mothers to choose life is a positive one we hope many people will hear. Culwell's parents should also be commended. Adoption is a blessing to parents and children alike. But to adopt a child with disabilities is even more courageous. To all the parents who have chosen to selflessly do this, we thank you.
This week Culwell will make two appearances in Southeast Missouri. The Vitae Foundation will hold a pro-life benefit dinner Monday at the Perryville Knights of Columbus hall, 31 Church St. in Perryville. A second dinner will be held Tuesday at the Jackson Knights of Columbus hall, 3305 N. High St. in Jackson. Both dinners are free but require reservations. To make reservations, call Kristina Davis at 800-393-5791 or go to www.vitaefoundation.org/events. Both dinners begin at 6:30 p.m.
