The United Way of Southeast Missouri is seeking volunteers for the Read to Succeed program in the Cape Girardeau, Jackson and Scott City school districts. Volunteers will be paired with elementary school students to help them advance their reading skills. Volunteers are needed for 30 to 40 minutes sessions between the hours of 8:30 to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday. Volunteers are welcome to sign up for one or multiple sessions. For more information, contact 334-9634 or readtosucceed@unitedwayofsemo.org. Background checks will be required.
The Stoddard County Ambulance District will be conducting its 27th annual "Home for the Holidays" project Monday and Tuesday. They will be taking patients who are unable to travel except by ambulance from the nursing homes of Stoddard County to residences in the county. The service is available to any patient who is not ambulatory and would like to spend some time with their family on Christmas Eve or Christmas. After the visit, the ambulance district will transport the patient back to their nursing facility. They will be allowed to stay as long as they wish on their home visit. It can be just a few hours or even overnight. There will be no charge to the patient or their family for the service. Anyone interested in the program should contact the activity director at the patient's nursing home. All arrangements should be made through the appropriate nursing home, which will then contact the ambulance office to set up the schedule.
