Town & Country FCE

The Town and Country FCE Club met Thursday, June 13, at Golden Corral to celebrate the 58th anniversary of the club. Linda Thompson is the only remaining charter member. The club was formed through the efforts of her mother, Zola Riehn.

Minutes from the April and May meeting were read by Sue Jones, secretary. Thompson gave the treasurers report. Both reports were approved as read. Pennies for Rural Women were collected.

The business meeting was opened by the president, Mary Klaproth.

The club received several nice thank-you cards from the students at Parkview State School for the end of school party the club sponsored. After the party, members donated two box fans to the Salvation Army to help those in need.

There are scholarships available for members to attend the MAFCE conference to be held Tuesday through Thursday, Oct. 1 to 3.

Members were reminded to buy gas at the Acees Convenience Store at center junction during the month of June. The club will receive a portion of gas sales during “Pay Back at the Pump” on pumps 1 and 2. This money will be used to support community projects.

National FCE Conference will be in held Wednesday through Sunday, July 24 through 28 in Erlanger, Kentucky. Klaproth plans to attend.

The club planted flowers in the bed they sponsor each year at the University of Missouri Extension Center in Jackson Monday, June 3. The Extension Center donated some plants and mulch for the flower bed.

Klaproth announced that she received a first-place award for the report on the club's Chile International Dinner that was held Thursday, March 14.

The door prize was won by Thompson. Club out will be at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, June 27, at Pizza Inn at Fruitland.

The next meeting, the annual club picnic, will be held on the tentative date of Wednesday, July 17 on the lower level of the University of Missouri Extension Center. Fried chicken will be purchased by the club from Food Giant in Cape Girardeau. Members are to bring a side dish, food service and drinks for themselves and their guests. Brenda Pender and Lois Seabaugh are in charge of arrangements.

Cape Girardeau County FCE Council

The Cape Girardeau County FCE Council met on June 6th at the University of Missouri Extension Center. President Mary Klaproth presided. The pledges to the American Flag and the Missouri Flag were recited. The devotion, “Do Unto Others” was presented by Kage Club.

Roll call was taken by Judie Herbst, Cape Girardeau County recording secretary. Attending were members of Kage, Lamplighters, Town and Country and Oak Ridge Clubs, totaling nine members.

The minutes and treasurer's reports were given.

Suggestions were made for fund raisers including the 10% day options at several places. The Acee Gas/Convenience Store in Gordonville, Pumps 1 and 2, will participate the month of June. All members are encouraged to participate at Acee’s for the month. We took part last month with Jimmy John’s in Jackson. These funds will go toward the upcoming scholarships that are becoming available this fall.

The Day of the Family was held in May. Kara Clark Summers was in charge of the event. Cape Girardeau County Commissioners signed the Proclamation for the Day of the Family. Several FCE members were present.

A weighted blanket workshop date was set for Thursday, July 18. The group will meet at 9 a.m. at the University of Missouri Extension Center. Pizza will be ordered for lunch with those attending sharing the expense.

It was announced that the fall district meeting will be hosted by Doniphan in Ripley County. More information will be made available at a later date.

Klaproth reported that the state report on the County Weighted Blanket project, submitted by Jo Ann Hahs, won first place in the state in the “Action” category.

Applications for member scholarships were distributed. They are as follows:

n Mary Martens Scholarship for the State Conference to be held in Columbia in October.

n Missouri FCE Alumni Scholarship also available for the State Conference in October,

n Conference Scholarship that covers the registration only.

The deadline for these three scholarships is Saturday, Aug. 10. The theme for the FCE Conference will be “FCE – A Key to Success.” The craft workshop to be held preceeding the conference is "Wreath Making.” Jo Dixon will purchase an item to represent Cape Girardeau County in the silent auction.

The Cape Girardeau County FCE scholarship applications for 2024 were also distributed. These applicants must be a Cape Girardeau County high school or home-schooled graduate and be a resident of Cape Girardeau County. They must have a minimum of 30 college or post high school credits, must be enrolled, and have a GPA of 2.75. The $300 scholarship will be paid directly to the institution in which the recipient is enrolled for the spring 2025 semester. This can be an out-of-state institution as long as the applicant is a resident of Cape Girardeau County. These applications are due Tuesday, Oct. 15.

The National Conference will be held Thursday through Sunday, July 25 through 28 in Erlanger, Kentucky.

The next Cape Girardeau County Council Meeting will be held at the Extension Center Wednesday, Sept. 4. Nominations for a two-year term for recording secretary and treasurer will be presented by the nominating committee at this meeting.

Kage FCE Club

The KAGE FCE (Family and Community Education) Club met Thursday, June 13, at the Cape Girardeau Senior Center. President Jobyna Daume called the meeting to order.

The pledges to the United States and the Missouri were recited followed by the Club Collect.

The devotion titled "Sunshine" by Ralph Spaulding Cushman was read by Judie Herbst. It reminds that winter goes and birds sing again in the sunshine of summer.

Barbara Marshall led the group in singing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame," she passed out some Cardinals baseball schedules. Roll call was favorite ball park food. Mentioned were corn dogs, nachos, beer and cheese puffs.

Daume gave a report on Father's Day. It was first celebrated in Spokane, Washington. It was introduced by Sonora Dodd whose father was a single parent with six children. She felt he should be recognized the same as a mother. It was brought before Congress as early as 1913 but it wasn't until 1972 that it was made a permanent National Holiday by President Richard Nixon.

The club's project in June were the fans for Salvation Army. Sarah Ross made the purchase for the club and will see to their delivery. Teen Challenge is the club's July project.

Judie Herbst presented Barbara Marshall with her 20 year-service certificate.

A program was presented by Jo Dixon on Malaysia, our study country this year. Malaysia, population of 33 million, is in Southeast Asia and is about the size of New Mexico. It is home to 4 UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITES. It leads the world in rubber production. It has several vast nature reserves and many endangered species. The country is mostly Islam, with the balance Buddhism and Christianity.

Heerbst will present the program next month on our nation's independence and the American flag.

At the County Council meeting, it was decided the Autism Weighted Blanket workshop would be July 18, 9 am, at the lower level of the University of Missouri Extension Office in Jackson. Jo Ann Hahs received first place in points for her presentation on the workshops.

The state MFCE conference is Tuesday through Thursday, Oct. 1 through 3 in Columbia. There are scholarships available for part of the expenses. Members are urged to apply.

The next Kage Club meeting will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 11, at the Cape Girardeau Senior Center.
