A Bird in the Hand

Jan. 8, 1954 Southeast Missourian

This huge barn owl held by Kelley Gaines is not completely satisfied with his captivity, and Kelley has to use strong leather gloves to protect himself from the bird's talons. A friend of Gaines downed the owl while hunting, slightly damaging a wing. Gaines is nursing the bird back to health and will give him his freedom. His first meal in captivity was a rabbit leg--and he ate bones and all. (G.D. Fronabarger photo)
