By developing an honorary doctoral and professional degree program, officials at Southeast Missouri State University have taken an important step toward enhancing the school's stature.

The Board of Regents approved the plan at the suggestion of Dr. Bill Atchley, university president.

Rather than recognize academic achievement, honorary degrees award distinguished professional accomplishments or service to society. Southeast's program will honor outstanding citizens in the fields of teaching, scholastics, creativity, public service, philanthropy, the professions and industry.

The university hopes to develop the honorary degree guidelines in time to award the first degrees by spring commencement.

Not only do honorary degrees accord prestige for the recipients, they improve the image of the university by helping to attract nationally recognized speakers.

There are many successful people whose resumes include links to Southeast Missouri State University and Cape Girardeau. An honorary degree program gives the university the opportunity to recognize them for their achievements.
