Dear Editor:
United We Stand. Pay attention to this name, America. This is the name of the grassroots organization begun by Ross Perot, and new supporters are joining the ranks by the hundreds every day. We are a gathering of concerned citizens coming together to demand major changes in our government and in our lives. We have a strong statewide network here in Illinois, and now we are putting together our country and community groups; and we need YOU.
Today, of course, our first and foremost goal is to help Mr. Perot becomes President of the United States. We believe his program will be the quickest and safest way to bring our country out of its horrible tail-spin. In the past few weeks, economists the word over have reviewed Mr. Perot's plan to balance the budget, reduce the deficit, and bring America back to leading-nation status; and almost all of them agree that this is the only logical and workable plan.
However, after Nov. 3, United We Stand will not disappear into the sunset. There is much work to do, always another election down the road, and we have many and great changes to bring about. Let us tell you about some of our goals.
- Even now we are putting together our Congressional accountability committee. From now on, each and every congressman and senator will have to account for how and why they voted as they did. We plan to be education on what the voting and laws concern, what the ramifications are, and if we don't agree with each lawmaker's way of voting, we plan to vote him out!
- Phase out the Electoral College. Roughly 50 times in the history of the college, the electors have voted opposite to what their electorate called for. The quality of our government being what it is today, we can't afford to keep a body of this type in control of our government.
- Go back to open primaries. We firmly believe that it nobody's business but our own concerning for whom we vote. Millions of Americans today refuse to vote in the primary for this reason; and, tragically, this fact often swings election to conclusions we didn't necessarily want.
- Reform our education system. We are sick and tired of being told our children are at the bottom of the academic ladder! It's time to give them the quality education they deserve; and in doing so, we will guarantee the quality of our country's citizens for generations to come.
- Do away with foreign intervention, foreign lobbyists, and special interest groups in our federal government. right now these people are coercing our Congress to heed their wishes: they have a hand in making our laws; and then we support their countries with our tax dollars for foreign aid in food, medicine and military support.
- Also, the line item veto is a must to insure proper passage of good legislation with the pork barrel attachments.
These are just a few of the goals United We Stand will work toward. If Mr. Perot becomes the next president, some of these goals will become reality sooner than later. If he doesn't, they will still become reality -- it will just take a little longer. But we are committed to these goals and believe the majority of Americans want to see these changes. If we united - heads, hands, and hearts - we can demand the necessary changes.
