To the Editor:
I have been a Perot supporter from the outset. Needless to say, I was impressed with his ideas and the non-politician attitude that he possessed. The possibility of his election is very doubtful. Hopefully, he has helped open our eyes to some of the areas that are needing to be changed, not just for older folks like me, but the younger people in America.
My reason for writing this letter is to hope that younger Americans will stop and realize how important it is to stand for something or you will fall for anything. Your children and my grandchildren are faced with problems that we haven't had to face. If you think we pay large taxes now, what do you think will be placed on the future leaders of America?
I guess that growing old has some advantages. It won't be long till I will be forgotten and the world will continue to turn. However, those who remain, especially the younger crowd, will deal with problems much greater than drugs, crime, AIDS and health care.
Unless we as older Americans lay the groundwork and learn to love our neighbors instead of looking for faults, what will happen is almost automatic.
A different way of deciding what is better must be implemented. We need to be better informed and that means more homework for adults. We need to wake up and realize that unless we teach our families the best ways, they probably won't learn what is most important in life. American men need to stand up and lead their families. For so long, the mothers have carried the load and have done a pretty good job, I must admit.
I watched a commercial on TV explain how a young lady had purchased a new automobile, and the decided how she would try to find a job to make the payments. Don't you think this is putting the cart before the horse? Do you think your grandparents would have thought this is the way it is supposed to work? Unless we set excellent examples and raise our level of family importance, this same kind of situation will happen again and again.
If you haven't thought being a well-informed American has obligations, now is the time to wake up. As you wake up in the morning, the next thing you do is get up, then stand up and get ready for a new day. I hope that all Americans, especially the younger folks, will realize that now is the time to stand up and be counted. I challenge you to begin today, and start at home, then watch it spread. Exercise your freedom to vote on Election Day. You can make a difference. I urge you to begin, now.
