Dear Editor:
As members of the community, we wish to express our concern at the distribution of the recent "hate flyer" on the Southeast Missouri State University campus and in the local community.
We believe that our community should strive to embody the ideals expressed in the Pledge of Allegiance of "liberty and justice for all."
These values which we hold dear as Americans come under attack where bigotry and intolerance prevail. We envision a community in which racism, anti-Semitism, homophobia, and xenophobia are recognized as threats to the common good. We aspire to a community in which the contributions of all people in all their diversity are valued as gifts.
The real problems we face as a society cannot be solved by scapegoating but by cooperation and hard work by people of good will.
We pray that those whose hearts are filled with hatred by transformed by love.
