Bible guidelines

IN BIBLICAL times, the Israelites repeatedly drifted away from God, but they always got into trouble by doing so. They never seemed to connect their departure with their increase in trouble. Our country also has experienced its ups and downs when moving towards God and away from him, but so far the American people seemingly can see no connection. We need to realize, individually and collectively, that God's biblical standards of behavior are relevant and necessary if any country is to receive his blessings as has the United States in the past. If we continue to think we can block God out of important areas of life without destroying ourself, we are wrong. Our pattern of thinking about God needs to be radically improved if the United States hopes to move forward instead of backward in the days ahead. Pray that the American people wake up to that danger. God's love is unlimited, not his patience.

Keep offices open

I DON'T believe that county offices should close during the day for a birthday party or any other kind of party and leave their customers waiting in the hall for an hour for them to open when those offices are supposed to be open certain hours during the day during the week. I really think this is an imposition on people who are going to do business in those offices.

Try VA care

I SEE our fine representative, Mr. Emerson, has lung cancer. He's going to the very best hospital and will be treated by the very best doctors. Why doesn't he go to Poplar Bluff and be treated at the VA Hospital and the VA doctors? That way he can be treated as well as veterans are.

Better off now?

I WANT to comment about the question: Does anyone think they're better off now than they were 30 years ago? Federal workers, federal retirees and people on welfare and who are receiving stuff from the government, as well as foreign aid people and all these lobbyists for big business and unions and environmentalists -- they're all in better shape than they were. In fact, they've got massive increases in welfare and all this sort of thing. The people who aren't better off are the taxpayers and the workers. They're all being taxed out of their skulls.

Notre Dame soccer

I'D LIKE to say congratulations to Coach Brad Wittenborn and Assistant Coach Jeff Worley and the Notre Dame soccer team on the 1A-3A District championship win. Notre Dame's soccer team is definitely No. 1, and I'd like to say that the team has played hard throughout the whole season, playing schools much larger than Notre Dame and winning with a good record. I'd also like to say thanks to the fans for their support of the team. Also good luck in the future tournament play. I hope that they go all the way.

Column isn't funny

JAMIE HALL'S column is not funny. He's an asshole. His shallow analysis of sports is unoriginal. He incorrectly describes Nashville as a backwards city. Haven't we heard this junk from every other bigoted sports writer in the country?

Get rid of old hotel

OF ALL OF the places under consideration for the new federal building, I'm greatly in favor of getting rid of that old hotel down there. I believe it should come down.

Smoking on TV

I'VE NOTICED that on the TV shows, they're really starting to have a lot of adults smoking cigarettes. If we're trying to get the nation to quit smoking, why all of a sudden are the TV shows starting to show people smoking more than they used to? What's going on?

Intersection lights

I'M CALLING about Highway 61 under I-55 as you're coming down the ramp from St. Louis. When you drop off I-55, you enter into a dark zone if you come after dark. There are no lights except the green arrows and the red circles. A friend from out of town was with me recently when we dropped off that. She was asking, "Where is the road. How do you know where to turn?" It is completely dark. I would suggest a dawn-dusk light be installed at each of those dropoffs, and that would help immensely to keep a wreck from happening.

Recycling suggestion

AS I drive along the streets in Cape Girardeau on recycling day, I see very few small bags left at the curb. Why could we not do this just once a month or twice a month instead of every week and save on recycling gas and manpower while picking up all of this recycling? I'm 100 percent for recycling, but there are only small bags each week.
