Cape Girardeau has done it again. The engineering department has selected a St. Louis architectural firm to design a small elevator project for the city hall. Three Cape architects submitted requests to be considered plus two from out of town. When we send our tax dollars out of town, we never see them again. Money spent locally keeps returning many times. The Chamber of Commerce tries to promote the use of local businesses. Luckily, the Cape architects get a lot of work from out of town. They would starve to death if they depended on the city work or school work.
IN REFERENCE to your article about the Scott City School Board seat that's open: I think that if Debbie Miller ran for that seat and only lost by 33 votes, why would the seat be given to anyone else but her?
JUST A word on the library move in Jackson. I'm a senior citizen from Scott City, and I hope the same Riverside Regional Library board doesn't do to the Jackson residents what they did to us, which is move the library to a very inconvenient place.
THE REPUBLICAN Party claims it is for the American home, but it is against the minimum wage. Republicans say they are for the benefit and welfare of all people, but they vote against national health care that makes sure that everyone gets good treatment so they won't die before their time. They'll up and say they're for Social Security and that they want to prolong it, but they want to cut it where more people will be feeling the burden, nursing homes will go broke and hospitals will go broke. Like Harry Truman said, they're going to come along on election day and want to buy your vote, and many of us are going to tell them it's not for sale. They're going to have find other ways to make a living.
I AM the parent of a Notre Dame cross-country runner, and I want to congratulate Kelly's boys on their district title win. They had an outstanding season. I also wanted to point out that the Missourian failed to recognize that Amy Arteem of Kelly finished fifth in the girls' competition. She will also advance to state. Congratulations to her as well.
I'D JUST like to comment on the guy who killed the 2-year-old child. I think it's ridiculous that a jury actually recommended the minimum sentence for him. I'd like to know where these juries come from. I'm 36 years old, and I've never been called for jury duty. I'd be happy to do it. Maybe I'm a little too well educated. Maybe somebody with a bachelor's degree is a little too well educated. I guess they have to get high school dropouts to do it. This is apparently right because nobody with any intelligence could recommend the minimum sentence for anyone who killed a little two year old child.
I WAS just wondering why we don't have a singles club here in this town. I understand some of the churches probably have one, but that's just to get new members for them. I'm thinking about a community singles club for men and women who would like to get together occasionally socially. If there is such a club in town, I certainly would like to know about it.
I READ in the Missourian that Southeast Hospital is looking for a new helicopter to lease. Wouldn't it be a good demonstration of cooperation between the hospitals for Southeast Hospital to share leasing of helicopters with St. Francis Medical Center from Air-Evac, the fixed-based operator at Cape's airport?
