THOUGHT I might join the rest of the callers about the Holly Dunn entertainment at the SEMO District Fair. She's a fine young lady, and on television she does a remarkably good job. At the fair she did a incredible job in spite of one of the worst sound systems I've ever heard. I felt sorry for her. I was sitting in a box seat, and I couldn't understand a thing she said. There were a number of people who said they couldn't understand her. I think that was a shame, because she was deserving of better than that.
I AM so sick and tired of hearing these cotton-picking politicians hollering about cutting Medicare in order to balance the budget. I have one thing to say to these politicians: Get off the senior citizens' backs and the Social Security recipients' backs and cut where cuts need to be cut. I say stop foreign aid, not cut it. Stop every last penny of it. Stop feeding every country in the world except our own American people. It is time that these politicians get off their butts and start treating these American citizens as American citizens, the people who have paid the taxes into this country for years and years and years. Get off the senior citizens' backs. It's time to cut where the waste is: the space program and a bunch of these other Johnny-on-the-spot programs. Leave the senior citizens alone. We don't have enough coverage now.
NOW ANOTHER Perot. I certainly hope so. Who is grooming him to be president, the news media or you Republicans? You can bet your fanny that I'm a Democrat, and all working people should be after what Reagan did to the working class. He put us back 50 years, and some are still trying to say he was great. Not in my book. I guess you who think you are rich will never learn. Most of you don't even know someone who is rich enough to be a Republican. Democrat all the way, baby.
I HAVE a suggestion for Southeast Missouri State University. Why not eliminate the football program completely and use all that money for grants for education? More people would benefit by it than a few guys running around out on the field.
AS A Scott City resident, I would like to comment on the police chase where the Scott City police officer led a chase on the interstate and a woman was injured as a result. While I agree that the Scott City police officer didn't actually hit the vehicle and wasn't at fault, I feel he had the responsibility to know that he was going to be endangering other people's lives when he came up to that busy intersection. I don't think I'm alone in my opinion that it would be nice if the Scott City police officers would stay in town patrolling rather than patrolling the interstate. That's why we have highway patrolman for.
I JUST wondered if the public had noticed that the people who are telling us now we have a health crisis are the same people who said two years ago and said we did not have a health crisis. They should have gotten together and worked this out two years ago on non-partisan basis. They're playing politics again with something where the public will suffer, and we're very much confused because we don't know who to blame.
TO THE caller who'd like to see the movie "To Wong Foo": I'm sorry you compare our religious stranglehold to the major city where everything it tolerated and accepted. God's plan provides a foundation for strong families and respectful community relationships. I wish more straight people would follow the Ten Commandments. It's not a gay-versus-straight issue.
TO THE caller in Friday's Speak Out who stated that he moved his family here from a major city where everything's tolerated and accepted and was critical of the religious atmosphere in this community which created some feelings toward gay behavior and the showing of movies that weren't appropriate: He talked about he'd rather have his children at home with his gay friends instead of straight friends. He said that's how strongly he feels about the kind of caring people in the Cape Girardeau area. I've only got two suggestions to him. Why don't you go back to the major city where you moved from if you liked things the way they were there? Secondly, this is the reason the major cities are in tremendous problems from crime to social problems, welfare, disease, bestiality, sex, pornography and all the other things that he would say are tolerant.
IN RESPONSE to Kathryn Welsh's letter to the editor on the local establishment that supposedly is for kids entertainment yet also has numerous pornographic videos for rent: When my family first moved to this community this summer, we went to that establishment to rent videos. We left empty-handed, leaving a complaint for the management that they cater to kids and yet have pornographic films throughout the establishment. Hooray to Kathryn Welsh, and hopefully that establishment will get rid of those films.
I WANT to comment about Congressman Henry Waxman and Congressman Sam Givens from Texas who got mad because they're disassembling all these federal programs that benefit their constituents. They put these in over the years. They carefully connived to put layer on layer of government bureaucracy and giveaways so they could keep people dependent on the welfare system and keep them in office. Now this senior citizen's lobbying group gets 98 percent of its money from the government. They're like union bosses. They don't care what happens to the working class, but they act like they do. Now these people are being shown for what they are. They're really having a fit. I'm just glad to see it happen. I hope all of them have to go work for a living. I hope Newt sounds the charge. We need to go even faster.
I'D JUST like to say that I support Newt Gingrich 100 percent in his Medicare changes. If we don't address this problem, Medicare will go broke.
