CONGRATULATIONS to Notre Dame soccer team on its defeat of Central soccer team. You are on the front page in my eyes, except in this area we are not.
FOR THE people who think of the trees on their property as a cash crop waiting to be turned into a pile of lumber, consider this. According to a horticulture publication a study some years ago estimated shade trees growing on a community street have an average value of $50 for inch of diameter. So a tree that measure 63 inches around the trunk is worth a $1000 in increased property value. Not only that, but it continues to appreciate about $50 in value each year.
I WANT to comment about the testimony of Randy Weaver on the Ruby Ridge incident where the FBI killed his wife and son. After World War II we took the Nazis and tried them. The court said that if you get an order from the government and it is against humanity it is your duty not to follow it. We hung the Nazis and Japanese for doing that. I wonder what we are going to do with those FBI agents. Idaho does have a death penalty for murder. I don't care how high it goes. Whoever covered this up and killed this woman, they need to execute whoever gave the orders. This is a high-level government cover up. They need to bring them to justice.
WE WILL vote for a tax for air conditioning for schools only. We will not vote for a tax with a list of other things along with air conditioning.
I WOULD like to comment on the reply to the call titled "Timber is cut." The property owner should be permitted to make a decision to log or not to log the timber on his own property. Some people like trees, and some prefer cash. But anyone who would so blatantly destroy the whole property value of a whole subdivision cares only about the cash.
WHILE WE were downtown Aug. 27 to view the Mississippi Queen, my husband took a fall. Several ladies helped him to his feet. I wanted to tell them how much we appreciated their assistance.
GOODBYE, old Marquette Hotel. Welcome to the new federal building.
SEPT. 6 was Cal Ripkin's day and a day for baseball. Not Bill's day or Al's day. Why must the president want to take from an modest man, a hero to many, part of his day in history Wouldn't a personal phone call with congratulations and possibly a future visit to the White House have been more acceptable?
I REALLY like Marc Powers' column about the classroom air conditioning. I do not think that they need air conditioning in the schools. Many industries are not air conditioned. They all work in the heat. I went to a school where there wasn't any air conditioning, and it didn't hurt me one little bit.
I SUGGEST constructing the new federal building at the site of the old St. Francis Hospital on Good Hope Street. It would avoid having to tear down any old historic buildings. It would be a perfect location.
I REALLY would hate to see all the old historic houses removed for a new government building because I think that is one of the links to our past. Why not put the new government building down on the riverfront, because I don't ever think we are going to get a gambling facility in there. There is a lot of vacant land down there.
