Why the change?

JUST HEARD on the news that the economy grew the last of '94. Pray tell, why did we go to the polls and change parties? It's just like you're getting better and you change doctors. It doesn't make sense.

Cable company concerns

I'M SENDING a letter off tonight to the consumer station in Pueblo, Colorado on cable TV that we have in Cape Girardeau. It's funny to me that money that we pay, here it is 1995, and they can't stay on the air any longer than what they do. On and off, on and off, on and off. And when there's a little rain or a little wind, they're off. And Sikeston's cable TV is all the way up to Fruitland, and they're never off the air. Why is it? I'm so sick and tired of paying the price that the cable companies are wanting here in Cape Girardeau and they can't stay on. Can't the city of Cape Girardeau do something about it? Can't they get cable out of Sikeston in this town? What is wrong?

I'D JUST like to say I heard something on the radio this morning, a Cape station, 103 FM I believe it was, and I'd just like to say that if cable TV is planning on taking on the telephone company, they'd better think twice. They can't even stay on the air on TV long enough to have cable much less to have the telephone company. And I'll tell you something else, I've been with AT&T ever since they took over, and that's the only one I'll ever belong to.

Not getting money's worth

I'D LIKE to say that if cable TV can't stay on the air any longer than what they're staying on, I think that they need to take and give us more cable, at least three months of cable TV free of charge. The money that we pay is not worth it.

WELL MY prayers have been answered. I knew it was just a matter of time before our local cable company would get some competition. Now that they have, they're going to treat their customers better. Well, all I've got to say is TCI, bye, bye.

Protesters have supporters who stayed home

TO THE caller who thought that there were only three measly little protesters there at the strip bar, just because there were only three people who show up doesn't mean there weren't a lot of people backing them up wishing that they could be there too. Most of the people I've talked to think that strip bars ought to be in slummy areas, not in Cape Girardeau, and I agree with them.

Get off your moral high horse

I HAVE a comment for the people who think the strip bars are wrong here in town. All I can say is that they need to stop being so moral, because there's a lot of people whose husbands and a lot of children's fathers come into the place. I work there, and I don't see anything wrong with it. You don't have to go into it if you do not want to. There's not prostitution going on. The people there are clean, wholesome. They're altogether nice people. So I feel sorry if a few moralists can't get off their high horse.

City should go after non-recyclers

I WOULD like to know when the city is going to clamp down on people that are not recycling their trash. I am getting sick and tired of paying $12.13 a month for trash pickup, when I don't have enough trash to pick up. One pickup a month would be ample for me. I am having to pay for these other deadbeats who are too lazy to recycle the plastic, the glass and the metal. If the city does not come up with a different plan than what they have now, I am going to discontinue my recycling and start putting it in the trash like everyone else does. The city could control this if they put an effort to it but they are not trying to put an effort to this and I'm sick and tired of paying for these scumbags who don't care and will not recycle. It's time for the city to force them to.

Leave Social Security alone

I JUST want to say, all you young and some old people out that are still working and paying into Social Security, I want to warn you, you will not have Social Security. You know when Reagan went in the White House, he tried to do away with it. Well now the Republican party has in mind to use that to balance the budget, and if they stay in power as much as two terms, that will give them a start to whittling on it. So stand up and say no. Bob Dole will never make it to the White House. He's too intent on hurting President Clinton. I think he's a sick man.

Busted budget blues

I JUST have trouble that believing that anybody could refuse a balanced budget amendment, and I'm straining my brain trying to figure out what the nation's going to do without it, because we're already in a rut, and this seems like our only way out right now.

Mizzou would be wimps in SEC

ALL THESE comments the last few days about the Big Eight and the University of Missouri, I'd like to state a few facts. I've been watching Missouri basketball for years. Yeah, they'll wind up in the tournament, almost all the Big Eight will. Here's the thing about it, how far do they normally go? Outside of last year, when Missouri made it to the third round before they finally got knocked off by Arizona, they normally go out in the first round against nobodies. If people in Missouri want to see how tough their basketball team is, let them join the Southeast Conference. They'll see what tough is. You won't see them with these big 23-6 records. You'll see them with about half and half wins, and the wins they'll get mostly will be out of the conference.

New south-side school?

I WONDER if the school board intends to ask for a new school for May Greene district, since the whole south end will be isolated by the new highway location for the new bridge.

Fix existing streets first

I HOPE the city council sees fit to fix up the projects, like widening Broadway, and really get other streets in good shape instead of new additions. If you can't take care of what you have, leave the new projects alone.

Rush the adulterer

TALKING ABOUT Rush Limbaugh and President Clinton, Rush Limbaugh continually hammers Clinton's morals, but he don't say anything about his own. He was married three times. His wife was married three times. He lived with her for three months before her divorce, and according to the Bible, he's committing adultery every night he goes to bed. And everybody seems to brag Limbaugh and down Clinton.

Praise for the police

ON THE morning of March 2, I had to call the Cape Girardeau Police Department. I'd like to thank the lady taking the call and the two responding officers. All three individuals were prompt, courteous and professional in carrying out their procedures. I would also like to encourage other citizens of Cape Girardeau to show appreciation for the department personnel. Not all individuals are lucky enough to have such professionals.

Maybe we are naive

EVERY TIME I read where KZIM's Carol Keeler received an award from various community groups, I have to laugh. Whenever the majority of the callers disagree with her, she inevitably loses her temper and attempts to belittle the community as a whole. On Tuesday, she mockingly referred to Cape as pristine because she perceived that the residents were more concerned with the school issue than with other issues. On other occasions she has referred to us as naive and narrow minded because we often don't agree with her brilliant opinions. On one account she is right. We must be naive to give Cape's biggest bad mouther community awards.
