Grass in the street

THERE'S A city ordinance against leaving grass clippings in the street. Besides that, it makes your whole area look tacky. The street cleaner trying to sweep it up makes a worse job. It just spreads the grass. So come on. Sweep up your own clippings.

Scoreboard a plus

SOUTHEAST MISSOURIAN, I really do like the scoreboard in the sports section. It's really neat to be able to read it that way. And since the baseball season started, I can't remember. Who won the World Series last year?

An A+ to Ron Nall

I'D LIKE to give Ron Nall an A+ for his opinion column in the April 29 Missourian. I too was wondering about the Missourian's motives for printing that Forbes magazine excerpt. I for one am proud of the efforts being made by the local schools to educate our young people. Keep up the good work.

Discourse is beauty

THIS IS in regard to the people that have been calling into Speak Out and writing letters about Jay Eastlick and Rush Limbaugh. I believe these people are taking advantage of the tragedy in Oklahoma City to condemn other points of opinion. The problem with the liberals is that they cannot stand to have more than one position spoken or voiced, and that position has to be their own. Discourse and discussion are the beauty and joy of this country, and the fact that there are more than one point of view being voiced today is very healthy for the future of this country. I don't necessarily agree with everything Rush Limbaugh or Jay Eastlick say, but I honor their right to have their opinion and to voice it in public.

Foil around tomatoes

I HEARD on television to rap foil around tomato plants to keep cutworms from cutting them off. It's much easier and more simple to stick a nail in the ground next to the plant. It's been done for many years, and it works.

Jay holds his own

I WAS about to de different and call Speak Out in defense of Jay Eastlick but after reading Saturday's Opinion Page it looks as though Mr. Eastlick shut up the tender hearted whiners quite nicely on his own. Good going, Jay. Hang in there and keep your frank, hard-nosed opinions coming. I love it.

Blackwell is best

I JUST wanted to say that Sam Blackwell had a wonderful article in the Missourian this past week, and I think he's far and away the very best writer that you have on the Missourian staff. On the other hand, the worst writer you have is Jay Eastlick, and he is a lot like Rush Limbaugh. I realize that they have a constitutional right to write and say anything that they want, but that doesn't mean that we have to agree with it.

Thatcher's ideas

AS FAR as what we should do to give the federal government more power to prevent another incident like the Oklahoma City bombing: I personally like Margaret Thatcher's suggestion. No parking around the federal building and ban the type of fertilizer that was being used or alter it in a way where it can't be used in explosives. It's ridiculous that the attorney general was trying to get us to hire 1,000 new federal agents and also change the writ of habeas corpus, to name a few. Margaret Thatcher has had the best suggestion.

Early career path

REGARDING THE A+ schools: The goals are good, but I am concerned about kids having to pick a career path so early and then have trouble changing it later in high school. Age 16 should not be too late to decide you want to be a doctor.

Jackson's fountain

I AM happy to see the fountain in Jackson's courtyard spraying so beautiful again. I applaud our young city administration. The new blood is sure making a difference and show they have everyone's interest at heart.

Trash at Capaha Park

I WENT to the Capaha Park Sunday. The park looked like the city dump. Trash cans dumped over, beer bottles thrown all over, not just a few, a lot. Empty cases of beer laying around, paper cups and napkins thrown all over the park. A few weeks ago the Friends of the Park did a wonderful job and had the park looking great. I applaud them and boo those who have left their party remains behind. These people, which I assume, are all over 21 with the presence of beer, are old enough to know better and should be held responsible to clean it up. My biggest question is, where's our police department and why do they allow this to go on? This mess could not have been created in just a few minutes. This was the remains of a serious party. Just sign me "P.O.ed at the P.D."

Marketplace wages

TO CITY employees who want a pay increase, I want to tell you a couple of short words: Free market. The point is, if you're not getting paid enough, then quit, go find another job. We'll try to hire someone else for a lower rate. If we can't, then we'll rehire you for more. It's very simple. As long as there are people willing to do your jobs, then we have no reason to give you a raise. Just because you want it is no argument for getting it.

Tiring liberals

A LIBERAL is one who is not narrow in opinion, or judgment, one who is tolerant. Yet it seems when liberals don't agree with what you say, they want to rescind your sacred American right of freedom of speech. You people who continuously call Speak Out and whine and complain about the express opinions of Jay Eastlick and Rush Limbaugh are getting very, very tiring. Never mind the fact that many of us agree with much of what these two men are saying and enjoy reading and hearing them say it. Point is, Jay Eastlick writes opinion columns. Rush Limbaugh expresses his own opinion on radio and TV. If you don't like what they say, don't read, watch or listen to them.

Board needs a black

THE COUNTY commissioners have set the Cape Girardeau school board back 100 years by refusing to appoint a black person to the board. They have a pretty lame excuse for not appointing Marie Walker. They were really searching hard for some reason not to choose her. The problem is with her is that she cares, she's a woman, she's a black person and she's involved in the community.

Misplaced priorities

TO DAVID Koresh lovers: I you had been living during World War II you would have probably bashed President Truman for the bombing of Japan. You would have probably bashed President Roosevelt when our brave troops went in to take over Nazi villages. I think your priorities are in the wrong place. You're not blasting the dirty culprits, the ones who caused the children to get murdered. FBI and ATF agents lost and risked their lives to go in there, because that dirty monster would not let those children come out. I think they ought to be commended for bravery.

McNamara's profits

HOW DARE Mr. McNamara try to make money off the American people when he personally was a cause of so many of our men dying in Vietnam. Why is it all of a sudden he has decided the war in Vietnam was wrong? Everybody protested that war. I am 65 years old, and I remember very well.

Bearing arms

I'M NOT a legal beagle but take a look at Amendment Two of the Constitution, it's very short and concise. Quite simply, I have the right to keep and bear arms and to use them in self defense. Of course, none of us have the right to shoot anyone at any time for any reason. I'm all for no-gun zones like around schools. Otherwise I think Cape has a constitutional problem with its gun laws. It is perfectly legal to transport firearms in any state. In fact, if I check into a Cape motel I can keep my guns in my room, because that is legally my home for the night. Therefore, I am entitled to defend it as such. Also read the first few words of Amendment Two about militias. The key words there are "well regulated." So why can't the feds do what we're doing in Iraq? Clearly identify and assign observers to certain militia groups, and if the militias balk at that or break laws, simply shut them down and disperse them or prosecute as necessary.

The Socialist Dispatch

I WISH those Bible-hating, Clinton-loving, bleeding-heart liberals would get off Jay Eastlick's back. If it weren't for Eastlick and Kinder on the Southeast Missourian editorial board, the paper would be a mirror image of Pulitzer's St. Louis Socialist Dispatch.

No fancy jails

I JUST read the article in the Southeast Missourian about the overcrowding in the jails. I think that's just exactly where our prisoners should be: in overcrowded, uncomfortable, un-air conditioned jails. They don't need new jails with air conditioning, color TV, workout room. The punishment should suit the crime. Maybe that will be a deterrent to crime.

Defending Cindy

I'M CALLING in regards to the person who doesn't like the new KZIM "Talk of Cape" with Cindy Jeeter. I have listened for the last couple of weeks too, and Cindy does not preach hate. She seems to believe that people should be responsible for their own actions in life and the government shouldn't have to take care of everybody. Try listening again and see. Keep up the good work, Southeast Missourian. You're doing a good job too.

All-white board

ISN'T IT odd that the school board is all white with the NAACP screaming discrimination? And thanks to three white men that are very rich who are on the county commission. It's not surprising that they chose three rich white men to fill the three vacancies. That's just going to show you that it's not what you know, it's who you know. There should have been a woman on there, someone chosen from the east side or southeast side of town. If you are poor or black or a minority, forget it. You don't get anything in this town.

Cindy let's you talk

I READ in Speak Out some uncomplimentary remarks about Cindy Jeeter on "Talk of Cape." I think she's doing a great job. She's at least allowing people to talk, far more than the previous person they had on there.

Some old needs

SURE HOPE all these transportation meetings get a few old concerns done that have been around for years like widening Broadway and Independence.

Qualified choices

I AM really pleased with the new members of the board of education. The county commission did an excellent job in the selection process. It is refreshing to see choices made only on the basis of qualifications. By the way, I am a woman.
