I SECOND the notion that anyone who makes $300,000 a year has no business drawing Social Security. They've been blessed. They ought to forfeit their future Social Security and be glad to pay into it get Social Security out of the red. Why should they be so greedy? I know it's not like welfare, but it should be an honor. They should be so thankful that they may not have to rely on it. So stop being selfish and start thinking of other people besides yourself, you rich people...

A way to save Social Security

I SECOND the notion that anyone who makes $300,000 a year has no business drawing Social Security. They've been blessed. Street extensions needed

I SURE hope the city of Cape Girardeau extends Middle Street one block south of Independence and Merriweather east one block of South Frederick Street. No need to wait for the new federal building or any other building.

Our international policies

THE WAY I see it, regarding high taxes on everyone, is that beyond covering all the needs of our country, we have to police the world. Since the atom bomb of 1945, we have to be sure there is no retaliation. We live in the greatest nation in the world. That's why the immigration figures are so high. So let's be thankful for our country's international policies to keep our nation free and at peace.

Leash is a lot cheaper

I'D LIKE to respond to the lady who was issued a ticket for her dog not being on a leash. She said that her ticket was too expensive at $71. Well, did she ever consider that a leash was probably only $10 or less?

One death gets the attention

I WOULD like someone to answer a question for me. I don't understand why the media makes a huge deal about a little girl's death. Evidently she was pushed by her parents to fly the airplane, and I know she was years old and her death is a tragedy. And everybody makes a big deal about one death when so many thousands of babies are killed by abortion. Our president vetoed that bill, and some of the pictures and video clippings of these type of killings during the abortion process were so graphic and so horrible that they couldn't even show that on our news. Would someone please tell me, is our world going whacky or what?

Movies in color now

TO THE person who called in about the black movies. I didn't realize that there were black or white movies anymore. Every movie I've seen was in color.

Day-care costs match quality

IF YOU think your day-care costs are too high, look at the cost from this angle. Parents are concerned with the dollar amount per week and also concerned with the high turnover rate as well as having a decent preschool program. We day-care owners are here to tell you the following. In order so that tuition does not take your entire check, we must keep the cost of tuition at a minimum. Day-care providers have the third most stressful job with the No. 1 job of stress being that of an air traffic controller. The high turnover rate is due to both stress and low pay. In order to be able to pay anyone what she's worth means raising your child's tuition in order to cover the salary. If you would like for day cares to provide a decent educational program, you need a degree teacher with four years of college education, which means a salary of at least $16,000 a year. It seems a lot of parents want the educational program but don't want the tuition to rise to provide this service. You can't have it both ways. So, please, for those parents who want the education, don't complain or be surprised by a tuition rise. This is the only way to keep excellent employees.

Thank you for hospitality

I WOULD like to let this wonderful city knows how much a fellow traveler has appreciated its southern hospitality. I've been unfortunate to have several complicated and problematic situations while I've been here in this city, and I have been amazed at how so many people that I have come into contact have just gone above and beyond to help me resolve my problems. It's very nice to see a smile and hear a few kind words when you a far piece from home and problems keep happening. But thanks to the kindness and the goodwill of the people here in the city, they've made what could have been a nightmare a much more pleasant situation. Thank you, and just know that when you give a smile and a few kind words to strangers that sometimes it's very much appreciated. This is my way of saying thank you.

Carton explains it all

I REALLY liked the editorial cartoon where it shows a bunch of elephants, presumably representing the Republican Party, in hell. That about explains it all.

Strong sermon was upsetting

I WENT to Mass last Sunday because I really wanted to go, but after the priest's little sermon on abortion I was so mad and upset I wondered why I bothered to embrace Catholicism. I realize the Catholic church is very much against abortion, but what he said and did from the pulpit was wrong. To give a blow-by-blow description of a late-term abortion where there are children and youngsters present is wrong. To make matters even worse, he had his facts very distorted. If he wants respect simply because he is a Catholic priest, then the president of the United States deserves respect because he is the president. And if he wonders what god Mr. Clinton prays to, I wonder what god he is supposed to represent. It became very apparent to me how you can upset people to the point where they'd take a gun and kill another human being over the abortion issue and feel justified in doing so. The sad part is there are people out there who never question what is said in the church or from the priest's mouth. It also makes me sad that this is the best leadership that the church has to offer.

Today's prayer is excellent

I'M COMMENTING on today's prayer. I want to say this is what I call newspaper excellence: a simple prayer line.

Lake would cover old farms

I READ with interest about the wonderful new lake that they're going to put in out there on the other side of Millersville. They didn't want to put the new federal building in and wipe out them old homes, but it's alright to wipe out the 150-year-old farms out there. Everybody who wants that lake in is making some money out of it, Nobody out there who owns the farms wants to get rid of the farms, but it's alright to move the federal building to keep from wiping out the beautiful old homes. What about the beautiful old farms?

Minimum wage: lower it

ARE THEY out of their minds raising the minimum wage? They should be lowering it. For people on Social Security and people raising a family, it is hard enough to buy services and groceries. It means all prices will be raised again if they raise the minimum wage.

May Greene concert was marvelous

I JUST wanted to call and let everyone know they missed a delightful time at the May Greene Spring Concert. The children sounded marvelous.

The ripple of a pebble

THANK YOU very much for the prayer each day on the Opinion page. A pebble tossed in water makes many ripples.

Wonderful Notre Dame musical

I WOULD like to say congratulations to the cast and crew of Notre Dame High School for their production of "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers." It was just great. The school, students, faculty and parents should all be commended. Also I think there should be a thanks for the men and women of the community who donated their time to play in the orchestra. It was just a great musical, and it was so wonderful to see young men and women using the talents that God's given them to the best of their ability. Please, keep up the good work, Notre Dame.

Thanks for Today's Prayer

I'D LIKE to say thank you for putting Today's Prayer in your newspaper.

Thrilled with the prayer

WHAT A wonderful surprise to find a prayer on the newspaper's Opinion page. I think this is just wonderful. And then down in the editorial where it says Today's Prayer has been added. I am just thrilled with this.
